About Michael

Hello, tutoring community! My name is Michael and I have been tutoring for the past six years. After receiving my B.A. in history from the University of Oregon, I spent the last two years teaching first grade in Chicago. I have now returned home to Oregon and am enrolled at Lewis & Clark to earn my Master’s in Education. Though I will be endorsed in high school social studies, I have tutored and instructed students from the pre-kindergarten to undergraduate level.

My emphasis in tutoring is to ensure that the subject matter is accessible and memorable. In order to achieve that goal I will help students break down any project or paper into terms that they can understand. Whether that’s verbally deconstructing an historical text to make a thesis statement, preparing for a standardized test, or working through each step of the writing process to create a well-reasoned essay, I have strategies to guide all learners to the desired outcome.

As an undergraduate student, I instructed both undergraduate and graduate classmates in writing and reading fundamentals. I focused on helping students with their thesis composition, voice, and grammatical structure. I also worked with text analysis, enabling the student to draw important information from sources to use in their essays. In addition, I have also taught elementary and middle school reading and writing subjects, including phonics and close reading. I also love public speaking and believe it’s a crucial skill to have in the academic and professional world. During my time in Chicago, I often utilized public speaking when leading community youth projects, as well as when I was invited to teach a volunteer recruitment workshop at the Chicago Tutor/Mentor Conference.

My passion lies in history and political science. I devoted my undergraduate studies to the nuances of Latin American, U.S., and Western European history. Upon completion of my teaching license I will teach U.S. history, government, geography, and economics in the high school setting. As a tutor, to ensure that my student grasps the facts of certain historical events, I will help them find and use their sources to construct well-reasoned and evidenced papers.

In addition to teaching and tutoring I enjoy playing piano, failing at frisbee, and sleight-of-hand magic - though I don't think that will come in handy during a history paper... I am generally available in the late afternoon and evening, and am happy to meet you wherever is most convenient. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

As a first-grade teacher, I taught my students Common Core based phonics every day during literacy block. I worked with students in small groups as well as individually. I injected numerous modalities in my teaching, such as visual charts of vowel teams, recital of letter sounds, and whiteboard word deconstruction. I then consistently reinforced the concepts when my students read their leveled reader books.

Social Studies

I earned my undergraduate degree in history from the University of Oregon with a focus in Latin American, U.S. and European history and government. I have been accepted to Lewis & Clark's Master's in Education program for 2016-2017 with an endorsement in social studies. In December of 2015 I passed the NES exam in social studies. I have tutored undergraduate and graduate students in history and government essays, with an emphasis in creating a clear thesis, and corroborating source texts in body paragraphs.
