About Elizabeth

Hello,

My name is Elizabeth, and I am a fifth year undergraduate student of Arabic Language and Literature at Portland State University. (That is simply a very formal way for me to say that I am also a language learner, though perhaps I am at a different stage than you are.) I am literate in classical Arabic and I can hold a basic conversation in the Levantine dialect (spoken in Syria, Jordan, Palestine, etc.). My most recent rating from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' spoken evaluation was "Intermediate Mid".

My strongest area is literacy, both in English and in Arabic. I have demonstrable skills in translating documents from Arabic into English, and copy-editing in English comes almost second nature to me. I am in the process of finishing my undergraduate studies in Arabic language and literature, and would love to pass on the strong foundation in Arabic literacy that I received from my own teachers.

As a non-native speaker of Arabic, I am in a strong position to tutor other non-native language learners because, having been through the process, I can anticipate what my students' difficulties might be in learning to decode or construct meaning in another language.

As a native speaker of English, I am also in a strong position to tutor those who wish to become literate in my language. I am comfortable enough with the language and syntax of my language to be able to catch errors quickly, and grammar "mistakes" are often fascinating windows into the way that other people think.

If you are both dedicated and curious, there are whole new worlds that can open up to you by way of acquiring skills in another language, and I am ready to help! Send me an e-mail and let me know more about your needs, and let's see if we can't help one another.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
