Portland State University (Master's)
I come from Romania. I learned English when I moved to southern California at eight years old and started learning Spanish when I was about thirteen. I've enjoyed language learning since then, and I would love the opportunity to pass that enjoyment on to others.
I received my BA in Spanish and Philosophy in 2014 at Humboldt State University, and I have just finished my study of Spanish language and literature as an MA student at Portland State University, where I have taught beginning level Spanish courses. I have also been abroad to Mexico a few times, to Ecuador for a semester abroad with HSU in 2011, and to Spain in 2013.
The main benefit to tutoring is the one-to-one ratio, and I plan to make the most of this advantage. My lessons will be as personalized as possible so as to encourage and engage the student to get involved and seek knowledge on his or her own.
I am very patient and want the student to learn, achieving this by careful evaluation of skills upon first meeting. As a language tutor, I am realistic, without overly high expectations. However, I do want to challenge the student, and balancing the fine line between overwhelming and challenging the student is a priority. Some basics are vocabulary, verb tenses, and pronunciation. Regular homework and feedback are important components of the learning process that help gauge student progress.
I look forward to hearing from you and becoming involved in your learning process! I come from Romania. Ioan-Paul is an excellent tutor! Very patient, kind and knowledgeable. He was able to sort through every question I had in a clear, concise manner that helped me to understand not only the proper usage of a word (single vs. pleural; male vs female, past/present/future tense) but also how to pronounce the words correctly, putting the intonation and emphasis in place so that I can be understood. And this was just the first lesson! I look forward to our lessons in the future.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Besides earning my BA at HSU in Spanish and recently finishing the MA Spanish program here at PSU, I have traveled to Mexico, Ecuador and Spain, where I have gained diverse language acquisition and cultural experiences.
