About Lynne

I wrote my doctoral thesis on the ways in which cultural conceptions of gender and emotion structure film narrative – and vice versa. I focused on tomboy movies, which means I basically have a PhD in advanced Jodie Foster studies...in my spare time, I play rugby and eat a lot of sweet potatoes.

For the past five years, I taught a variety of English, gender studies, and writing courses at Cornell – Shakespeare and Film, Tomboys in Time, Adolescence in Film, and Writing and Sexual Politics.

I also TA'd for the English course Desire and Cinema. I've also worked as a Writing Tutor for Cornell Career Services, helping medical school applicants with their personal statements. In college, I tutored students in Spanish as well.

My areas of expertise include writing and reading (English and Spanish, ACT and SAT), film, American studies, literature, gender studies, and more!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I wrote my dissertation on questions of gender, sexuality, and emotion in filmic narrative. I have taught and served as a TA for several film studies courses at Cornell University, including Shakespeare and Film, Desire and Cinema, and Adolescence in Film.

I have also created and published a digital film studies textbook on the online platform Scalar.
