About Catlin

Hello!

I hold a Multiple Subject CLAD teaching credential. I taught elementary school in California for over 10 years, grades 1-3. My specialty is teaching reading, and although I enjoyed being a classroom teacher very much, I preferred working with small reading groups.

After I retired I got very bored and began tutoring students who needed help with their reading, especially those students who had dyslexia. I am trained in the Barton Method, which is a multi-sensory method that allows the student's individual way of learning to lead the way. We all learn in different ways, and the Barton Method is fun, effective, and most of all - it works!! After 3 years of tutoring in California, I have moved to Portland, Oregon, with my Chocolate Lab Hershey, and two cats. I love to read and would be so happy to help you become a great reader!

I am an avid reader. I have taken and successfully passed the CBest (in CA), the RICA (Reading Instruction Competency Assessment), and the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) in English. My college major was English with a focus on American and English Literature. I hold a valid Multiple Subject CLAD credential.

I have 3 years' experience tutoring using the Barton Method, a multi-sensory, phonemic awareness approach. These sessions were one on one in a quiet room, for one hour. My students ranged from first to seventh grade. While a classroom teacher I also was trained and used Success for All and various other phonemic awareness reading programs. In my small reading groups (never more than 5 students) the emphasis was helping struggling students with phonemic awareness and encouraging each student's learning style so that they became successful readers.

Although I disliked it at the time, I will be forever grateful that I took Latin in high school. In elementary school I won spelling bees and was often asked to help other students with spelling and writing. I was a "reader" for teachers in Modesto, CA City Schools, reading their students' essays and correcting spelling and grammatical errors while pointing out ways to improve their writing.

I have guided previously struggling students who felt lost and helped them succeed at learning to read! I don't know who gets more excited and proud - me or the student! You will always have a friend if you have a book, and being a good reader will take you to places beyond your wildest dreams!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I was a classroom teacher for 1st grade, using a phonics based program.
I worked as a supplemental reading teacher for a pull-out program.
I am trained in the Barton method of teaching reading and tutored dyslexic students for 3 years using this program.
I took and passed the RICA exam (Reading Assessment Competency Assessment) in CA.
