About Stephanie

I am an experienced, dynamic, and compassionate educator, and I absolutely love working with kids. I have 5 years of experience teaching both Spanish and French (Italian and English too!). I have a BA from McGill University in French Language & Literature and Spanish Lang & Lit, and an MA from UConn in Curriculum and Instruction.

I love the spiritedness and excitement that kids bring to the table. Likewise, kids love how fun and energetic I am, and how my expectations and boundaries are clear and fair.

I am a language teacher by trade and my Master's is in Curriculum, so I understand the nuts and bolts of how language is learned best. I also taught English to elementary students for several months in Europe and earned my TEOFL certification there.

I have taught French/Spanish/Italian internationally at IB schools as well as in the US, and have experience teaching all ages - Middle School students, High School students, adults, and even elementary students ages 5-10. Because I have lived and taught all over the world, I have a uniquely multicultural perspective and this comes out in my teaching - I value diversity and emphasize it in my lessons. My teaching approach is one of dynamic, proficiency-based, project-based learning; I focus on what students can do with language, not what they know about the language. This unique approach means that students start to see a context for and feel connected to a language, and begin to speak and write with confidence.

How did I learn all these languages? I studied all three, but I was speaking them long before college! I grew up speaking Italian with my family and have been to Italy several times. I spent summers with my grandparents in Quebec and had lots of practice with French, though I eventually went to University in Quebec where I was immersed in the language. I began learning Spanish in school and minored in Spanish Literature, and have since then traveled to many Spanish-speaking countries and taught the language for over 5 years!

Contact me to schedule a time for us to improve your language skills! I am very excited to work with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified World Language teacher, so I have experience working with students learning an additional language. I am an English native speaker, but I also spend several months in Europe teaching English to young learners.

French

I have family in Quebec and spent every summer with my grandparents, interacting and playing in French. My immersion in French culture as a child inspired me to study French Language and Literature while in undergrad at McGill University, and I went on to teach French both in the US and internationally to High School and Middle School students.

Italian

I did my undergraduate degree at McGill University and majored in Italian Language and Literature. I also am of Italian heritage and grew up with a strong understanding of both the language and culture! I taught Italian at the high school level and have more than five years' experience in language learning, specifically focusing on proficiency.

Spanish

I am a certified Spanish teacher and have over five years' experience teaching Spanish at the Middle School and High School levels. I most recently taught Middle School Spanish at a prestigious International School. While there I also worked as the World Language Curriculum Leader and worked to create and implement a proficiency-based curriculum.

While completing my undergraduate degree at McGill University, I minored in Spanish Language and Literature. Since then I have traveled extensively to Spanish-speaking countries and have taught Spanish to almost all ages, from 11-year-olds to adults.
