About Jason

I am an English Instructor recently returning from Asia. I lived in South Korea for 3 years. There, I taught middle/high school for 1 year and university and adults for 2 years. After that I moved to Taiwan where I taught K-6 grades. I can teach reading, writing, speaking, pronunciation, and listening skills. I specialize in academic writing :)

I received an MA degree in TESOL from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, which has a very difficult and demanding program. This training has prepared me to be an awesome English instructor :) I love teaching and view myself as a language learning coach. I'm a very relaxed and friendly guy with a wide variety of interests and hobbies so I can incorporate a lot of different subject matter into sessions.

Creating a student centered learning environment is very important to me. What this means is that the students take an active role as stakeholders of their own language education and help in the customization of the sessions they are in. They make attainable language learning goals for the tutoring sessions, create a plan to achieve these goals, and have more control over content which relates to their academic, professional, and/or personal interests.

Having students learn through experience is also important to me. Experiential-based instruction promotes a learning environment that is based on real world problems, content, and context. The focus here is on using language in real world situations.

Learner autonomy is a keystone to my teaching style. A part of learner autonomy is helping the students to build their own language learning tool box. A student’s language learning tool box can consist of many different tools, such as: helpful websites, flash cards, dictionaries, podcasts, videos, music, reference books, comics, magazines, books, cellphone applications, and online tools. Another aspect of fostering learner autonomy is to scaffold the language learning process. First the student has a lot of support and guidance, but as she progresses, she is provided with less and less support until she can accomplish various tasks of language learning and use target language on her own. In a sense, learner autonomy is teaching and supporting the student to learn how to learn and to become a lifelong learner.

If you want to improve any part of your English knowledge, skills, or abilities I can help. :)
Please let me know if you have any questions and have a great day!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I earned a MA TESOL from the Middleburry Institute of International Studies. I have over 5 years of teaching experience from K-12 and university. I specialize in teaching academic writing, English communication, and educational technology.

Proofreading

I have peer reviewed and proofread many articles from my colleagues to students. I have been helping people with writing since 2009.
