I have always enjoyed the language arts and helping students of all ages improve their language skills. I have tutored native English speakers and non-native English speakers with reading, writing, listening, and speaking and it's always a pleasure to see students recognize their own improvements.
It's particularly rewarding to see children recognize improved facility with reading and writing. I have tutored privately and through the volunteer tutoring program at Portland State University.
Before I begin with a student, I determine what individual needs they have and what their goals are. If the student has a school based goal we will follow the school's guideline.
My time is quite flexible but I would appreciate a 24-hour cancellation time. I can tutor in the student's home or in my apartment, in downtown Portland.
I hold an Applied Linguistics degree Portland State University. I graduated summa cum laude and have a certificate in Teaching of English as a Second Language. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
