I am a former lawyer and tax preparer; I am a current tutor and teacher. I grew up in the United Kingdom and Canada, and moved to the U.S. in 1980. Along the way, I got a B.A. at the University of Toronto, and a Master of Philosophy from Oxford in the U.K., and a Ph.D. from Princeton in 1985. Teaching is my passion because learning was and is my passion first!
I teach math and English for schoolwork and for SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. My teaching experience includes the last ten years as a private tutor here in Portland and previously during eight years as an assistant professor at Oregon State University, and two and a half years as a graduate student. I have helped students with widely differing abilities, and can produce enthusiastic testimonials from grateful parents. Part of the reason for my success is that I care about my students' psychological health: I am all too aware from personal experience of the need to reduce stress in the learning situation, and it's a very serious focus of my teaching.
I have been teaching math continuously for over ten years: prealgebra, algebra, geometry, and precalculus. I teach both in a small private school and in one on one tutoring. In that time I have seen the whole range of challenges that students have with math. When I was very young I had to work at it, so I know first hand what tends to be difficult. If you had told me in my teens that I would be a math teacher as an adult I would have laughed: I am living proof that you can improve your math skills!
I will always listen to your concerns and create a sympathetic, supportive environment for learning. I pay careful attention to each individual student, and am able to tell when students are “not getting” the problem/subject in question. The decision to get tutoring maximizes your ability to use your inborn skills and your awesome potential. Although I have a 24 hour cancellation policy I am more than happy to reschedule as needed. I tutor out of my home near the Lloyd Center, or at your home. I look forward to hearing from you in your quest for learning! I am a former lawyer and tax preparer; I am a current tutor and teacher. I have taught algebra 1 and 2 and precalculus for many years both as a tutor to students of many different levels and as a schoolteacher. My reviews are excellent because I provide clear and friendly explanations!
