Hi everyone! My name is Steven, and my passion for teaching stems from an inquisitive, balanced thinking that can see where students are coming from at all angles. Even though I was very interested in learning different subjects in school, I was never the smartest. I was getting mediocre grades, and I struggled through math year after year. It came to a point where I had to decide if math was a determining factor in my college major choice when I nearly failed Algebra II in high school....

It came to a point where I had to decide if math was a determining factor in my college major choice when I nearly failed Algebra II in high school. However, I had an amazing teacher that encouraged me to take her Pre Calc course the next marking period, even though I didn't have confidence that I would succeed in the class. It turns out that I was much stronger in this subject area than I realized, and that there were very simple and common mistakes I was making that were hindering my progress. I ended up getting an A in the course, which inspired me to take AP Calc the next year and go to engineering school the following year!

As much confidence as I had built up, there were still obstacles I had to overcome in order to achieve my goals. Because I wasn't the greatest test taker, I was not able to initially get into the Chemical Engineering program at Rowan University that I desired to study. But I went in as an undeclared major, mimicked the first-year coursework, and eventually got into the program because of my GPA and work ethic. This adversity had helped me through the rest of my undergraduate career when facing an overabundance of coursework or a challenging problem.

In fact, I had two students going through the same struggles getting into their respective Engineering programs at Rowan when I was working as a tutor there. By helping them through Calculus and Physics, they had achieved their dreams by getting good grades and showing that they have what it takes to succeed. There is nothing more satisfying than that "Ah-ha!" moment when a student finally gets a concept that they have been struggling with for some time. To see students retain the knowledge I personally helped them obtain and use it to become more successful is truly humbling. Sometimes all you need is a little boost to achieve greatness!

I have been tutoring for more than 3 and a half years now, including 9 months as a Professional Exam Prep teacher at a franchised learning center where I am still currently working. I have experience tutoring a multitude of subjects, including Calculus, Pre-calculus, Physics [Newtonian], Chemistry [General], Statistics, and various algebra and pre-algebra courses. These opportunities have come through the Academic Success Center at Rowan University, where I worked while earning my Bachelor's Degree, and through one-on-one students whom I have worked with and are still currently working with throughout their academic careers. In addition, I work part time as a Graduate Learning Assistant in the Math Lab at Brookdale Community College.

I have personal experience tutoring students with learning disabilities such as Autism and Asperger's Syndrome, and have helped through algebra and calculus courses to pass with flying colors. Other mathematical subjects that I have expertise tutoring include: Calculus I and II, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Algebra I and II, Pre-Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Algebraic Modeling, SAT Math, and ACT Math. I can also help with Engineering coursework (Intro to Engineering/Dimensional Analysis, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Chemical Processes/Kinetics).

From my time tutoring privately, I have found that each person learns in their own unique way, and you really need to communicate with someone and be attentive to their studying skills in order to truly help them in their subject matter. Like me, sometimes all it takes is one teacher or mentor to tell you they believe in you and give you a push in the right direction. I strive to make you the best you can possibly be!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

In addition to applying algebraic principles to real world engineering problems in both my coursework and lab work/research as a Chemical Engineer, I have been tutoring algebra as both a subject and part of an exam prep program (SAT/ACT/SSAT) at a local learning center, and at the Math Lab of Brookdale Community College for more than three and a half years. I have brought students' failing grades up to passing and high achieving levels, including a student with a severe form of autism that I still tutor today through his academic career. Algebra is the foundation of many levels of complex math, and I will make sure you nail all the fundamentals you will need to succeed in your curriculum. Allow me to make your work seem like less work!
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is my bread and butter when it comes to tutoring, it being the most common course that I tutor privately and at a university/college tutoring center. For years I have enlightened students about the practical applications behind rates of change (calculus) and the area under a curve (integral), helping them through homework, projects, tests or just generally improving their grades. I have personally tutored AP Calculus students at both the AB and BC level, in turn helping them achieve their target scores of 4's and 5's. In addition, I currently work in the Math Lab of Brookdale Community College, where I tutor students anywhere from Calculus 1 to Calculus 4 (Differential Equations) in an open lab setting. As a Chemical Engineer, the most fundamental equations required to solve real world problems are the mass balance and energy balance, which are actually differential equations that require a thorough understanding of Calculus to solve. I can provide a wisdom of Calculus to students that will encourage understanding through rationalization, not memorization. In fact, two students that aspired to participate in both the Civil & Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs at Rowan University were struggling through their freshman calculus courses in which they needed to shine in order to get noticed. I had worked with both of them through my current job (at the time) at Rowan's Academic Success Center, and helped them get A's in their class, which in turn got them into their dream majors. I could help you achieve your dreams too!!
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have a vast knowledge of chemicals and chemical principles from earning a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Materials Science. In addition, I tutored Chemistry in an open setting to multiple students and one on one sessions all while earning my degree. Currently, I am tutoring Chemistry at a franchised learning center as an individual subject at the collegiate and high school level, as well as teaching ACT Science, which covers Chemistry inside it's passages.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have been tutoring geometry and calculus for 3 and a half years now, teaching the core concepts as well as applying geometric principles to solve engineering problems. This experience includes tutoring at the Academic Success Center at Rowan University, where I earned my undergraduate degree. I have tutored SAT and ACT math for a little under a year now, which covers a multitude of geometrical subjects, including coordinate geometry and plane geometry.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is one of my favorite subjects to tutor, as it was one of my strongest subjects while I was taking it in school. I like to see a lot of the problems in this course more as a puzzle than as a problem, because it actually can be a lot of fun after a basic understanding of principles! I have 3 and a half years of experience tutoring Precalculus in a university setting, corporate setting, and with students one on one in a private setting.

Chemical Engineering,

Chemical Engineering

I obtained a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering in May of 2014 at Rowan University with a Specialization in Materials and Bioengineering. In my coursework, I applied concepts of mass and energy balances, separation processes, materials science, and organic chemistry to real world problems in the classroom, as well as part of my research in the lab. Speaking of the latter, I have 2 years of drug delivery/bioengineering research as part of my chosen chemical engineering curriculum (engineering clinic), where I worked as part of a team to utilize a controlled release of an anti-cholera drug as well as an enzyme used to promote axonal growth with an enzymatic time released approach and a thermosensitive microparticle approach, respectively. Because being an engineer means working as part of a team, I was and am still constantly tutoring my teammates. For example, if we were working on a project that called for the particular solution of a differential equation, and my teammate was having trouble converging on a solution, I would explain that the range of initial conditions and the error tolerance within the software being used has a lot to do with whether or not a solution can be obtained. While obtaining my Chemical Engineering degree, I worked part time as a tutor both privately and at the Academic Success Center of Rowan University. Being able to tutor ChemE classes like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, separations, and kinetics would just be to merge my passion with my expertise!

Knowledgeable & Patient

Steven worked with our daughter in AP Chemistry and she was very pleased on his approach and knowledge of the subject matter. He really did a good job of going slow and making sure that she understood why she was taking the steps she was taking with each problem! We are very pleased with Steven's performance and will continue to work with him.
