Lewis & Clark College (English)
I have 48 recorded tutoring hours through an in-home education franchise requiring tutors with subject area expertise, and additional (independent) tutoring hours on top of that. I have helped a number of students to improve their reading, their writing, their math skills, and their critical thinking abilities, which become increasingly necessary as students—and adults, for that matter—learn to stand on their own two feet when approaching a given subject.
I graduated from Lewis & Clark College with a Bachelor of Arts in English, where I studied educational reforms, pedagogical methods, and sociopolitical issues that effect schools. In a teaching practicum I attended, I collaborated with Rieke Elementary School, integrating in-class theory with fieldwork. I studied the in-class lessons and teaching stratagem of a host teacher, and tutored 3rd-grade students according to specific needs. I have over 40 pages (single-spaced and with no paragraph breaks—the real deal!) of typed student feedback and evaluations, where I have diagnosed the learning style of several students and shared my insights and suggestions with parents.
Now I am a writing mentor for a volunteer project of mentors dedicated to helping youth connect with their story and sharing it through poetry. The project strives to work with youth who in some way feel they have not yet found their voice or had an opportunity to express themselves. I guide youth through structured writing activities individually or in group settings, and support them in identifying and authentically sharing what is in their hearts. We already have one collection of (unofficially) published poems.
I am friendly, patient, experienced, I love kids, I have two younger brothers, and I am a qualified professional in tutoring services. I am also ready and willing to tutor older age groups, including adults, with their reading and writing. I am an Editorial Intern at Tin House Books and hope to one day become a senior editor for a major book publishing firm. I also own a small online-based business in writing and editing services.
I look forward to meeting you and expanding horizons! Please feel free to inquire further about myself or my experience. In the meantime, happy tutor hunting! If I seem like a good fit for you or your young one, message me and I will get back to you before the day's end. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
