About James

First of all, thank you for taking the time to check out my tutoring profile! I'm really excited to be working with students from all over, and I know that you will benefit from my expertise in writing, editing, and ESL instruction. My love of teaching comes from a lifelong passion for language, writing, and interacting with other cultures. I've lived and traveled all over the world, and these experiences help me connect with students in my sessions. I'm really an organic instructor, so you will find that I use a lot of different methods and approaches to help support your learning. My instruction is tailored to my students' interests and passions, so if there's something you're really excited about, let me know, and I can turn it into a lesson that will give you long-term learning benefits!

My ESL teaching specializations include test prep (iBT TOEFL, FCE, IELTS), English for specific purposes (ESP), multimedia and technology discussion, phonetics and accent reduction, vocabulary development, native cultural understanding, literacy studies, and materials and curriculum design.

My writing and editing specializations include fiction, poetry, non-fiction, research papers, resumes, cover letters, business materials, training guides, journal editing, and web content.

I've worked in professional writing and editing roles for more than 8 years, and I've taught ESL at public schools, online, and at universities for more than 3 years. I earned my Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing from the University of Montana, and I have been trained in Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I'm also attending Portland State University for my Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL). I have additional training and certifications from International TOEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT), the English Teacher Training Center (ETTC) in South Korea, and the Gyeonggi English Program in Korea (GEPIK). In Hawaii, I also worked for the College of Education developing materials and an endorsement certificate for multilingual language learners.

I'm definitely not your traditional instructor, so if you're looking for someone who will adapt to your needs and goals, please let me know. I'd love the opportunity to help you along your language journey!

When it comes to scheduling, I try to be flexible. I know that sometimes things come up, and you may need to cancel a class. I prefer 24 hours notice, but not everything is that predictable. So I do make exceptions, and I do offer makeup classes.

As far as meeting locations, I'm open to travel, but I also prefer teaching over Skype or some other online platform. I have had great results with students in the past, and we can really take advantage of many additional resources for learning by interacting online.

Again, I'm really excited to be working with you, and if you have any questions, please send me an e-mail!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

IELTS

During my year of work at Language Over the Internet, I tutored a wide range of students from all over the world in English test prep. We used a variety of manuals and real-world examples from the various testing organizations websites and affiliated study centers. One student I tutored improved her score by half a point in less than three weeks, which enabled her to attend a program in the United States.
