About Gregory

Hi! I live in Milwaukie, Oregon, just south of Portland, and am currently writing my dissertation to complete a PhD in English Literature at the University of California–Davis. At Davis, I taught composition and English literature classes for seven years, and I have experience privately tutoring adolescents and adults, both in person and online. Outside of the academic world, I'm a musician and creative writer/songwriter, and I performed at clubs throughout the Bay Area for over fifteen years.

No matter the purpose of your writing, I can help you develop, organize, and revise it: resumes, application essays, school assignments, cover letters... you name it. I can help you with basic grammar, paragraph construction, overall paper organization, tone, and presentation of content, and I also have a knack for brainstorming ideas if you find yourself at a loss to get started. I believe the best writing combines directness, clarity, and the energy of exciting ideas. My teaching background also includes analysis and criticism of English literature, so if you find yourself confused by a school reading assignment, I can work with you on developing strategies to understand difficult texts. If you're struggling with standardized tests on English, reading comprehension, or writing skills, I can help you parse test questions to eliminate the incorrect answers and choose the correct ones. In every case, I make sure the process is clearly explained and, most of all, engaging to the student.

Our sessions can take place in person in the Portland metro area or online.

Look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

As a PhD candidate in English literature, I have had years of experience in the analysis of literary texts. For three years, I taught an English literature course at UC Davis that had undergraduates successfully read and interpret works ranging from Milton's poetry to Dickens' novels. I also taught expository writing and TA'ed for literature lecture classes. I obtained high scores on the Literature in English GRE Subject Test prior to my acceptance to UC Davis's English PhD program, so I am proficient at both expository writing in the subject and standardized testing.

Vocabulary

Although my teaching experience and PhD candidacy at UC Davis attest to my abilities with English, I can further vouch for my knowledge of vocabulary with my successful scores in ACT, SAT, and GRE standardized testing sections that focused on vocabulary. What’s more, a lifetime of obsessive reading and an addiction to enlarging my vocabulary have made me an excellent source for understanding—more than just the definitions—the idiomatic nuances and differences of similar words that are frequently found, for example, in analogy questions in standardized tests.

Writing

My writing experience includes professional, academic, and creative publications. As an audio tour writer for four years, my copywriting appeared on domestic and international museum tours. My research has appeared in academic journals, and I have presented at academic conferences. Literary journals have published my short fiction. I was a writing center TA as a graduate student at Mills College, and I taught and TA'ed writing classes at UC Davis for seven years.
