About Erica

As a college-level writing teacher for the past six years, I have a great deal of experience with teaching students of varying skill levels, needs, and backgrounds, including hundreds of ESL students. I've taught English Composition at a few local community colleges, multi-genre Creative Writing courses at the University of Oregon, and K-12 ESL in South Korea. I am passionate about helping students at any level to realize their full potential as writers, and to learn the basic skills that serve as the foundation for success in educational settings, in their careers, and in the broader community.

I create an interactive, supportive learning environment, and tailor my instruction according to the needs and learning styles of each student. I show students how to break down assignments or tasks into manageable pieces, encouraging and guiding them through the writing, reading, and critical thinking process as they learn and grow. I help students to build confidence as they develop skills and strategies that will enable them to be successful academically and beyond.

I believe in the value of customized learning and one-on-one instruction, and I can help you improve whether you are working on an academic, research, or college entrance essay, want to enhance your reading comprehension or critical thinking skills, or need guidance with the fundamentals of English mechanics, including grammar, usage, editing, and proofreading. Improving your skills starts with setting goals: together, we can develop effective strategies to meet your goals successfully.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Oregon, and I have 7 years of teaching experience. I taught K-12 ESL in South Korea for one year, where I worked with a wide range of students with varying learning styles, needs, and backgrounds. There I taught reading, writing, speaking, pronunciation, grammar, and I regularly collaborated with teachers and administrators on curriculum development projects and lesson plans.

Study Skills

For the past six years, I've taught study skills, and developmental writing and reading at the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, and Linn-Benton Community College. I am passionate about helping students to learn the basic skills that serve as the foundation for success in educational settings, in their careers, and in the larger community. I believe in teaching students fundamental skills and strategies that enable them to meet their goals and become confident and capable learners.
