I have been teaching Mandarin for 5 years at a Mandarin center here in Portland. My Mandarin is not fluent, but as a student for over 10 years with numerous trips to China, I have developed a working proficiency in the language. With my help you can gain a solid understanding of the pronunciation, grammar and typical expressions.
We will use an online training system (www.effectivechinese.net) which as the name suggest is very effective. This courseware was developed in cooperation with Chinese teachers here and in China. It consists of a progressive introduction to the language, tons of example audio, grammar explanations, flashcards and online quizzes which help you grow your skills between classes and/or tutoring sessions.
You will learn practical, fun, conversational skills while laying a solid foundation for future study. I specialize in working with adults who have decided to learn Mandarin and want to get a solid grasp of the basics before traveling to China or signing up for expensive schools. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach mandarin to beginning students, basically those who are in their first year of study. I have been teaching for 5 years at a local school. Although I am proficient in Mandarin, I am not fluent. I specialize in making the language accessible to adults and college students. I have spent nearly a year in China over the course of the last 10 years and I have developed practical language skills that will benefit any adult learner. And, more importantly, having taught hundreds of beginning students, I have refined the ability to bring clarity to this challenging subject.
