Hello and welcome!

My name is Nico and I have a Bachelor's of Art in Women, Gender, Sexuality, and Queer Studies from Portland State University. Go class of 2014!

I am currently a mentor/tutor at a local Multnomah County high school, working with sophomore level students through an AmeriCorps program. This program specifically works with students who are a part of marginalized communities. It is such a great passion of mine to work with high school students. Feel free to ask me more about this!

Additionally, I have a background in teaching and mentoring college students from Portland State University. I served as a mentor in their general education program, University Studies, for two years. I lesson-planned and facilitated 6 one-hour mentor sessions per week. For these sessions I collaborated with the instructor, working specifically to address academic goals for the students, the class, and the University Studies program, which included the following goals: communication, inquiry and critical thinking, ethics and social responsibility, and diversity of the human experience. I am confident leading and engaging students in workshops and curating lessons to address a range of student needs. I am capable of working with students in both one-on-one settings along with large group settings ranging from twelve to thirty students.

My two years of mentoring for separate college courses, Work of Art and Race and Social Justice allowed me to build strong mentor relationships with my students that have extended beyond my time at Portland State University. I would love to continue mentoring individuals who love to learn.

In addition to my mentoring history, I have over four years of student service experience working at a four-year urban institution. I have supported Orientation Programs at Portland State University as well as Advising and Career Services. My time with Orientation started as an Orientation Leader and later transitioned into Coordinator of Leadership Development. I developed collaborative team relationships, facilitated small groups of varying student populations, and promoted co-curricular student involvement. I am familiar with the obstacles that incoming and prospective college students face, both at the beginning of their college application and/or search, as well as once they are sitting in the classroom. My work with Advising and Career Services gave me insight into character building, goal setting, and ways to achieve and promote academic access.

I look forward to hearing from you!
