Hello, my name is Yuko. I was born and raised in Japan, where I went to one of the best universities in the country, receiving a Bachelor's degree in American Literature, and minor in French. Subsequent to graduating, I spent three months in Tours, France where I continued my studies in French. Then, I worked in Japan as an interpreter/translator in the maritime field. I moved to the States almost twenty years ago.

In June of 2014 I graduated with an AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) primary diploma and in the fall, I was granted my Master's in Education from Loyola University. Teaching has always been my passion. I think it is a natural result of coming from a long line of teachers, including my mother, both of my grandmothers and one grandfather.

Prior to beginning Montessori teacher training, I was busy giving lessons in Japanese and piano to groups and to individual learners from age 3 on up. I believe that learning a language is the equivalent of learning a culture, a way of looking at life. When studying Japanese with me, my students will also be immersed in various cultural aspects of the Japanese society. Depending on the student appetite, calligraphy and cooking may even be incorporated into a lesson. As a Montessori trained guide, I first and foremost try to understand who my student is, then guide a developmental plan to activate their interest in the subject. Learning a language is a commitment. I love to work with my student’s interest and help it flourish. I, too, am a lifelong learner (I have been studying German off and on lately) and I know that when you are motivated, you don’t mind hard work and then progress is continual.

Thank you very much for visiting this page. I look forward to meeting you.

Japanese

I have been teaching Japanese language and culture lessons since 2007. My students are varied: some want to learn the language to prepare for a trip to Japan, others use my tutoring to supplement their school curriculum. I have tutored elementary through college students and adults one-on-one, taught group lessons for all ages, and have conducted classes for business people in corporate environments. I strive to help my students become immersed in the Japanese atmosphere as much as possible to make a concept (through language) into a more concrete reality.

A great Japanese tutor to practice with

Yuko gives me confidence with my speaking skills. We started simple conversations with useful vocabulary. We reviewed a famous japanese poem with even more vocabulary that I can remember. Yuko is a very kind and fun person to learn from. She helps me make small but significant progress toward my goal of speaking Japanese.

Amazing tutor!

Yuko has been teaching my daughter Japanese for about a year. She is such a patient and skilled teacher. My daughter's ability to read, write, and speak the language has grown immensely under Yuko's tutelage. I highly recommend her!

Amazing, knowledgeable tutor

She is really great with my son. After only two meetings with her, he's already talking about how much he likes her. She's truly amazing. She speaks clearly with him and pauses to make sure that he understands. She explains things to him in a clear and concise manner. She even helped me with a question so I can assist him with his homework.

Great First Lesson

Yuko seems to have a good balance of culture and language. She is enthusiastic and passionate. She providing a little bit of homework (shukudai), but it wasn't a lot and we look forward to completing it before meeting again. She is also flexible with the resources we choose so that they resonate with us. She seems like she will be a great tutor for us.

Enjoyable lessons

Yuko is a great teacher! I highly recommend taking lessons with her. She's helpful at practicing with conversation and I enjoy going to lessons most of all. You'll benefit most from her lessons if you're willing to put in the time practicing outside of lessons.
