About Stella

I have B.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D in Genetics/Molecular Biology. During my many years in academic research I worked in Computational Biology - an inter-disciplinary field which requires knowledge of mathematics, computer sciences, chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology. So I am comfortable teaching many subjects, but I believe my expertise lies within areas of Chemistry, Mathematics and Genetics/Molecular Biology. I am currently working part-time and take just a few students.
I greatly enjoy working in one-on-one setting with students of all ages. During my academic career I guided graduate and undergraduate students through their thesis research projects; I also home schooled my son through high school and helped him prepare for SAT II Chemistry subject test as well as AP Calculus. My teaching experience includes teaching chemistry to high school students and to home school students and helping college students with first year coursework in chemistry.

I am patient and explain things clearly and approach material from different perspectives, depending on the student's learning style. My goal is see a student falling in love with the subjects of Chemistry and Mathematics, which are such incredible and important subjects, practically the cornerstones for all sciences.

My approach is to help and empower student through exploration and intuitive, experiential understanding of the subject. I do not enjoy tutoring students who are interested to just pass the test, my approach is broader and deeper. However, improving test scores come naturally when one feels comfortable with material.

Due to busy schedule I currently tutor only from my home in the inner NE Portland. It is quite close to PCC Cascades.
I am looking forward to working with you or your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I strongly believe that hard sciences and mathematics are not actually 'hard' once you get the basic concepts down. In fact it is a joy to see students empowered and taking off once they gain confidence in their abilities!

Because new concepts and skills in mathematics are consistently building on the previously learned material (well, geometry might be an exception), it is very important to keep the fundamentals healthy as the student works on the new material.
My approach will be somewhat different for different students, but overall, this is my strategy:

1. Find where student is with regards to current material and how comfortable the student is with earlier material required for understanding current one.

2. Maintain a good balance between learning new and reviving/maintaining the basics.

3. Address manageable amount of material per lesson - this will differ for different students and my goal is to find what this is for your student.

4. Develop a mid-range strategy: how much can be done in a week, what are the goals for the month, semester and how can they be reached.

5. Find your student's best way to absorb material.

6. Empower your student by helping them see what they actually can do

7. Bring other fun math into the scope - this again will depend on an individual student, but seeing how math is applied or played with can be a lot of fun!

Chemistry

I strongly believe that hard sciences can be fun and enjoyable. My goal is to empower the student by working in a supportive environment, addressing problems in a systematic way and preferably early in the course, before the crisis hits.

Chemistry is an intense subject; it requires a consistent and persistent approach. However it is also a key subject to many other disciplines and it is so logical and beautiful.

My approach will consist of finding the student's current level of understanding and comfort within the subject and moving in small but consistent steps forward. Chemistry goes fast and builds upon itself to a great degree, so revisiting basic concepts may be required frequently, until they are really solid. Once the foundation is solid, chemistry suddenly becomes enjoyable.

I may want to work with your student's teacher, if the student is OK with this. I am not very interested in tutoring so the student gets to pass the test. Th understanding of the subject is my primary goal. Good grades and passing the tests will be the side benefits of tutoring.

Genetics

I have a PhD in Genetics/molecular Biology from University of Minnesota in St.Paul.
During my study and training I worked multiple times as Teaching Assistant in General Genetics upper division course.

My postdoctoral experience and subsequent years of research at UCSD used and expanded this knowledge through my work in the field of Computational Biology.

Great!! — Stella is an amazing tutor! I attend Portland State University, and I had Stella help me with my General Chemistry class there. The material was difficult for me to grasp as I did not have a thorough background in Chemistry, but Stella managed to help me get a B+! I was so surprised that I managed that grade! She presents material in an approachable manner, is very easy to contact, and is flexible ...
