About Grant

Hi! I am a rising senior neuroscience major at the University of Southern California. I'm a passionate and thorough tutor, and there's nothing more satisfying for me than seeing a flash of understanding cross a student's face. I'd love to tutor any student in high school chemistry, biology, physics, high school math classes up to Calculus 1, and SAT or ACT prep.

I have a combined five years of peer and private tutoring experience. In my sophomore year of high school, I co-founded a peer tutoring program for math and science and tutored through that program twice a week until I graduated in my senior year. After my freshman year of college, I switched to private tutoring, and have been doing that as a summer job for two years. Aside from my experience, my qualifications for tutoring come primarily from the classes I've taken during high school and at USC. During my four years at Lincoln High School, I took two years each of chemistry, biology, and physics, all at the International Baccalaureate (IB) level. International Baccalaureate is similar to the Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum, and most colleges treat the two programs in the same way. I have also taken all high school math classes up to second year calculus, the highest level math offered by my school. I achieved the highest possible grade in all of these classes, with an overall weighted GPA of 4.33. At USC, I've taken multiple semesters of honors chemistry, honors biology, organic chemistry, physics, and math, finishing my last semester with a 3.9 GPA.

As I fairly recently finished high school and have spent a lot of time tutoring high school students, I'm very familiar with some of the issues that can crop up with science and math classes. Teachers can be unclear, PowerPoints and textbooks can be lacking, and it is very easy for a student to become confused about a particular concept or fall a little behind. I know I felt like I taught myself more chemistry in high school than my teachers did! Luckily though, being a tutor allows me to help solve this issue a little bit. One-on-one interaction is one of the greatest assets I can have, as it allows me to really personalize the way I teach. I individualize my approach to the specific needs of each student, and I strive to not only teach the material but really help the student understand it on a conceptual level. Each student learns differently Deep understanding might not be necessary to do well on a test, but it certainly makes it much easier and is vital to the creation of a foundation of knowledge that will be built upon later, in college.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed in your academics!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I originally took a high-school Algebra 1 class in middle school and passed with an A. Throughout high school and college, I have been tutoring students in Algebra 1, initially in the peer tutoring environment and later as a private tutor.

Biology

I have taken one year of regular high school biology, two years of IB level biology, and two semesters of honors general biology at USC, receiving an A in every course. It is one of the subjects I tutored through my high school peer tutoring program.

SAT Math

I took my own SAT only about two years ago, and received a score of 770 on the math section, answering all but one problem correctly. I have two and a half years of peer tutoring experience in both high school math subjects that the SAT draws its questions from and SAT math itself.

SAT Reading

I took my own SAT a couple of years ago, and received an 800 in reading. I have taken four years of English classes at the highest level offered by my high school, as well as a semester of English at USC. I have received the highest grade possible in each of these classes.
