About Bruce

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

Having spent my career in the business world, most of my time has been focused on educating people, whether they were my clients, my subordinates and in some cases my managers. The art of teaching is to inspire the student to want to learn and keep learning on their own. I accomplish this by listening to not only what the student says they understand and don't understand about a subject, but also to what they don't say about why it is they don't understand a subject. My goal is to make the learning process fun, challenging and rewarding for the student. If this doesn't take place then I haven't done my job. So, I only succeed if my students succeed, and I only have fun if my students have fun. It's a pretty simple, straightforward approach.

My teaching style is best described as patient, engaging and thoughtful. In some cases, I use a bit of the Socratic method to engage the student to explain a concept to ensure they're mastering it. In other cases, I will demonstrate multiple approaches to understanding a concept.

I am a lover of words and I want my students to develop the same appreciation. The world is a verbally intensive environment and the key to success is to be able to communicate clearly, concisely, precisely and with power. The ideas that my students have will only remain ideas unless they can communicate them thoughtfully. This is where I can give my students a distinct advantage, for I have had to communicate complex ideas in both the academic world and the business world.

I am also a creative writer having written a number of short stories. I thoroughly understand the creative process and relish the idea of helping students who want to write to discover their own voice and pen their own ideas and stories.

I am excited to work with you and look forward to the opportunity to inspire you to learn all that you want!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have an MBA in Finance and Marketing along with more than 25 years of experience in the following areas of business: Marketing, Finance, Real Estate, Commercial Lending and Legal Consulting. Most of my work experience has been in the area of Business Development where I spent a significant amount of time educating my clients about how to run their businesses more efficiently and profitably. In many cases, this required teaching them about some of the newer techniques in marketing, sales, finance and operations. Also, my first position out of college was the Assistant Operations Head for a major money center bank. I managed a staff of 35 people, many of whom I instructed in how to be more efficient in their positions. I feel qualified to tutor students about business because (1) it's where I've spent most of my adult life and (2) I have a patient and supportive approach that emphasizes thoroughly understanding a concept and its application.

Career Development

I feel qualified to tutor students in this subject area because I have focused a majority of my adult life in the area of continually developing my career. I have read widely in the area and have coached other individuals who reported to me at work on the keys to both planning and managing their careers. I have taught Junior Achievement in the area of career and life planning.

Marketing

I have an MBA in Finance and Marketing along with more than 25 years of experience in the following areas of business: Marketing, Finance, Real Estate, Commercial Lending and Legal Consulting. Most of my work experience has been in the area of Business Development where I spent a significant amount of time educating my clients about how to run their businesses more efficiently and profitably. In many cases this required teaching them about some of the newer techniques in marketing, sales, finance and operations. Additionally, during my graduate work in business, I held marketing positions on Wall Street with an Investment Bank and with a major food processing company in San Francisco, where I worked on all aspects of Brand Management including advertising and promotion. I feel qualified to tutor students about marketing because (1) it's where I've spent most of my adult life, (2) I have a natural marketing mind set and through understand of the essential 4 elements of marketing, and (3) I have a patient and supportive approach that emphasizes thoroughly understanding a concept and its application.

Sociology

I feel qualified to tutor students in Sociology because I earned my BA in Sociology, with High Distinction, from the University of Colorado. I have read widely on the subject and have engaged in Field Work in the discipline. My senior thesis in college covered an extensive review of a sociological problem in America that was used as a part of a larger study ultimately published by the professor overseeing my research. I understand all aspects of the Sociological study of social issues, including the classical theories propounded by writers such as Durkheim, Veblen, Malthus, Goffman, Mills and Parson.

Study Skills

I feel qualified to tutor students in the area of study skills because of the degree to which I mastered these same skills in high school, college and graduate school. Study skills can be taught and the methods that I have used encompass the areas of time management, proper outlining of the material to be learned, self-assessment done at specific intervals, and the use of flashcards, problem sets and exercises that draw upon both the material and skills necessary to succeed. For example, in math oriented subjects, being able to not only understand formulas, but also apply them to solving problems is key to mastering the subject matter. Building into a study schedule time to work on problems helps to re-enforce the material. In the areas of literature and writing, I stress the importance of understanding not only the content of what is being read, but also the reasons behind why it was written. And because language is important in everything I teach, I stress to my students the importance of building their vocabularies. Good study skills will always build on this because with a strong vocabulary, the study time becomes more efficient since the student is able to maintain continuity in their study sessions without having to constantly stop to look up the meaning of words.

The study skills that I have mastered have enabled me to excel in college where I graduated Phi Beta Kappa and earned my BA with High Distinction. My approach is through a careful balance of time management and understanding of the subject matter to maximize the student's absorption and understanding of the material.
