About Janet

I am interested in sharing my knowledge of New Testament Greek, church history, Reformation history and 21st century theology with interested students. I have an undergraduate degree in Religion from St. Olaf College. I also studied theology at Georgetown University for two years. Older children often have questions about the Bible. For example, why does the Bible say, “Slaves obey your masters” and also say that in Christ there is no slave or free? These kind of questions require a sophisticated understanding of the nature of the Bible and the purpose of the various authors.

An introduction to New Testament Greek will allow a scholar to evaluate assertions like, “Jesus said that he would make Peter and Andrew fishers of people.” The issue here is the word (hmm. . . It seems I cannot write Greek here). Transliterated, that is anthropon, mostly translated ‘of men’. But the Greek word for adult male human beings is a different word. Anthropon refers to people of any gender. (By the way, this is the accepted scholarship, but on the internet there are sites that argue against this understanding.)

What are today’s scholars saying about Jesus’ parables? The parable of the sower appears in all three synoptic gospels. The interested student may ask, what is different in these three tellings of the story? Are the seeds that fall on the path a certain kind of person? And do the seeds mean the same thing for each gospel?

If you are looking for Bible studies for small children, I am well-qualified, as I am a good story-teller. My 4-year-old niece recently asked my to tell the story of Noah’s arc over and over again in the car, the whole time we were driving to daycare.

Bible studies are the only thing I tutor on WyzAnt. I am a specialist.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
