About Jessica

Want to learn top study strategies from a summa cum laude (and Phi Beta Kappa) graduate? Learn the best ways to retain and understand difficult information (that will probably cut your study time in half).

I'll show you not only how to learn a new skill or excel in a particular subject, I'll give you advice for how to stand out as a super star student in school.

I'm Jessica Cox, a graduate of UC Berkeley in both Literature and Creative Writing. As an undergraduate student I ran 3 internationally reviewed art galleries while scoring straight A's in both undergrad and graduate courses. I have a passion for the sciences and have studied biology, psychology, anthroplogy, and neurosience in depth both at UC Berkeley and in community college. While my businesses kept me, well, busy, I had to learn how to perform at a high level in about 20% of the time other students had.

I want to show you how shortcuts can actually help you become a better student (and save you mountains of stress!).

For the past 5 years I've been working with students to develop the best methods for understanding difficult course material without the struggle.

Instead of traditional and outdated modes of teaching, I show my students how to use the skills and resources they already have in order to excel in a tough subject.

I can teach you how to study effectively (so you can retain more while spending less time studying), how to improve your knowledge of tough concepts, how to easily implement top-performing strategies for test prep, how to use past tests to improve test scores, and how to find supplemental materials to make assignments easier.

I specialize in tutoring Language Arts, SAT and ACT reading and writing, and essay writing. Alongside bringing up your class grade, my goal is to train you to develop highly desirable skills that fuel your passion and that will ensure your future success.

My students are saying:

Tutoring with Jessica has not only prepared me for the SAT, but it also taught me to apply all those strategies to my other classes. It has significantly improved my performance as a student. — Anna

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Writing for the SAT and ACT isn't difficult. There is a formula to follow, and once you know what to include, the writing portion turns into a fun and creative endeavor. I've been tutoring SAT and ACT reading and writing for over four years at institutions like Kaplan after graduating with highest honors from UC Berkeley's literature program. Now, as I pursue my own MFA degree at Pacific University I want to broaden the people that I help through individualized tutoring. The creative approach keeps learning interesting, and I work with the student to develop personal essays which can easily flow into an ACT or SAT essay.

Anthropology

As an anthropology fanatic I seized the chance to work with the infamous anthropologist Tim White while I was at UC Berkeley. I specialized in forensic anthropology as well as cultural, graduating top in my class in every anthropology course I took. My best work in anthropology was essay writing, where I build up a skill set in essay formulation and problem solving.

Biology

I take an integrative, story-telling approach to biology. The history behind how equations were discovered is as important and appealing as the science, and I've found it helps to know about the history for retaining information more easily. I have worked with school preparing the AP course audit, and have many hours tutoring biology and AP biology, and college level courses.

College Counseling

I have been a tutor of admission and scholarship writing for over five years and have experience in admissions for a variety of disciplines including Education, English, Psychology, Nursing, Anthropology, Ecology, and Biogeography. I have taken graduate courses in college counseling from UC Berkeley, and have worked as an admissions essay reader as well. My approach is creative and engaging--I will work with you to make your essay shine amidst the slush pile.

English

I am a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of California at Berkeley in Literature and Creative Writing. I have written numerous blog posts on tutoring, study skills, and test prep, and have logged over 200 hours as a tutor. English is my passion; I'm able to transform my teaching methods depending on which areas a student already has strength in, so that learning new skills comes as easily as possible.

Literature

I hold a degree in Literature from UC Berkeley where I graduated Summa Cum Laude. I have taken many graduate courses in English Literature at the #1 ranked graduate program (Berkeley again) and am pursuing an MFA in fiction writing at Pacific University. My approach is creative and engaging, with a focus on writing and critical reading. I help my students by finding out what they are passionate about and drawing analogies to make learning fun & easy.

Public Speaking

As the director of a successful art gallery and art institute in Berkeley and San Francisco I have much experience speaking in front of groups. To build my skills I have taken courses in public speaking from Santa Rosa Junior College, and worked one-on-one with independent acting coaches and professors at UC Berkeley to train for large conferences. The skills I wish to impress upon my students are simple: prepare, practice, and pause. I help to build confidence alongside ability.

Reading

I am a UC Berkeley graduate in literature with highest honors and highest university distinction. I have tutored many students ranging from elementary school to college who wanted to enhance their reading and writing skills. The best part about reading and writing is how fun it can be and how many doors it can open!

SAT Reading

My approach to the SAT reading incorporates the student's interests and knowledge already, so that confidence is built along side test taking strategies. I've tutored SAT reading for several SAT tutoring companies and use an integrative method which I have built up over years of interacting with students and with SAT.

Sociology

I have taken both undergraduate and graduate sociology classes at UC Berkeley in tandem with my literature studies. My focus has been in sociological theory, in both its formal and historical aspects; research methods; and writing. As a private tutor I have helped several college and graduate level students with final essays and dissertations. I work to help the students build a fundamental framework for the methods and theory of sociology and then delve into the more nuanced areas of writing and project development.

Study Skills

I have been trained by and tutored for Sylvan, whose program emphasizes inspiring great study habits. Many of my students have learned better how to organize their time, prepare for tests, and take effective notes. As a tutor for Santa Rosa Junior college I assisted students in reading for better understanding and using these methods and tips in other areas of life.

Writing

I have been a creative thesis tutor for four years, and have taught private writing workshops all over the San Francisco Bay Area. Students I have worked with range from post-college to middle school, but no matter the age, we always find a way to connect over the work. I have written for Science Reporter, and various online blogs, and my essays have been featured in Alumni publications as well as Alphonse Berber Gallery's New Images of Man and Woman catalog.
