About Rebecca

In high school, I completed seven AP courses, graduated fourth in my high school class, and went on to graduate magna cum laude with university honors from my college, so I know a thing or two about what it takes to be a successful student. My favorite color is blue and my favorite punctuation mark is a semicolon, and with a major in art and a minor in editing, I know that I’m a bit of an oddball. But that’s my personality and approach to learning. I have the mind of an editor and the heart of an artist; the hands of a painter and editor’s critical eye. I understand the rules of language but I also know how to exercise creativity.

I have a wide knowledge base and am prepared to tutor students grades K-8 in a variety of subjects, with an emphasis in language arts. I am also able to tutor for art and art history from kindergarten to undergraduate college level. As an enthusiastic learner myself, I am committed to helping my students find the excitement and joy in learning. If you’re not interested in learning and loving it, don’t hire me.

I consider my greatest strength as a tutor to be teaching students to write really well. Learning to write well can be one of the keys to success for any learner. As a professional academic editor, I am well prepared to help students craft compelling arguments, develop strong theses, and hone their writing to communicate with clarity, precision, and grace. I am a trained expert in the rules of the English language (grammar, punctuation, usage, and style, etc.), but I can also help students with the big picture: how to pick a thesis, draft an outline, or beat writer’s block.

I am willing to travel to your home for tutoring sessions, or I will offer online tutoring help and editing/proofreading for a discount.

I require 24-hour notification for a cancellation, but I will be flexible in offering a make-up time if you have to cancel last minute.

I look forward to the opportunity to help you find success and joy in any of your learning experiences.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have been drawing since I was a small child. In college I developed this natural affinity further as an art major focused on two-dimensional media (painting and drawing). As an art major, I took over 25 hours in drawing instruction alone. I am very familiar with multiple areas of drawing, from observational drawing, analytic drawing, figure drawing, composition, and perspective, as well as using various drawing media (pencil, pen, charcoal, etc.).

Painting

Painting has always been one of my favorite things to do. In college I developed this natural affinity further as an art major focused on two-dimensional media (painting and drawing). As an art major, I took over 20 hours in painting instruction alone. My favorite medium is watercolor, but I also have experience working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media, and I am able to help students interested in exploring a variety of styles.

Proofreading

As a college graduate with a minor in editing, I had a uniquely thorough education into the structure and rules of the language. I focused specifically on grammar, punctuation, style, formatting, and citation (primarily Chicago and APA). I have also worked for more than five years as professional editor editing and proofreading an academic journal and editing course material for an online university. I have worked closely with authors, and I am particularly skilled in giving meaningful feedback that will guide authors in how best to communicate their thoughts and ideas. Whether you want one-on-one help in person, or prefer to have me edit your work and send you feedback electronically, I am prepared to help you improve and polish your writing.
