About Claire

We are all life-long learners with a particular style of learning. When we discover what our strengths are each one of us can "cross-train" to help ourselves when we struggle with something new in learning. There are times for all of us, however, when some attentive, caring support can be just what we need to grow.

As a teacher/tutor/guide I listen and seek pathways to provide a wide range of options for my students. With support he or she can identify their strengths and gifts and use them when they get confused, stuck or troubled with a challenging subject or a particular assignment. Throughout my 35 years in education I have studied about brain development and the multiple intelligences. I currently teach half time at a local school. Within that community of learners I have access to "many minds" and resources to aid my individual students.

I look forward to meeting you or your student and witnessing breakthrough and new discoveries. Together we can scaffold the learning plan that makes the most sense and has lasting effect on your life or the future.

I provide intently individualized tutoring with a focus on Literacy: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. These components support each other. Each learner has tendencies towards integrating new knowledge or skills in his or her own way.

My Strengths and Skills are composed of a student assessment; one-to-one communication with focus on learner gaining in-depth knowledge of his/her learning style and how to access his/her “Multiple Intelligences”, 35 years of experience as an educator with pre-k through 7th grade students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Literacy includes speaking, listening, reading and writing. All of these forms interact with each other. When getting to know a student I spend time initially with assessment of strengths and needs and we make plans together. Writing about reading and listening to your own writing being read can opens doors to life-long literacy. The grammar and rules of English support being a strong communicator.

Writing

Reading, writing, speaking and listening are interconnected forms of communication. Literacy includes all of them. If a student is struggling in one arena we can approach it from another.
Some students love to speak and may benefit initially from being listened to about their writing idea before formalizing it in writing. For other students adding movement, sound, drawing, colors, cartoon bubbles (like in graphic novels or cartoons) opens up the doors to writing. Skill building based first on strengths can encourage any student to be a better, more confident writer.
