About Serena

From Southern California I am nearly a native Spanish speaker. Although I struggled with learning Spanish at first, I learned firsthand that the best way to learn a language was through speaking it every day, as much as possible. I studied Spanish in a classroom setting for eight years, as well as in school in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, where I lived with host families. I am fun, patient, outgoing and humorous. The best way to learn a language is to have fun, practice and keep an open and patient mind. Although I want to have fun while teaching, it is also important to focus and practice. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

In college, I took a Public Discourse class in the Rhetoric and Media Studies department, where I studied techniques and different styles of public speaking such as ceremonial, informative and persuasive. We learned the building blocks needed to write and develop speeches as well as the basic techniques used to deliver and perform them. I learned the fundamental techniques and styles used in creating and executing a speech by studying literature regarding speech development and performance, as well as through studying historical speeches and critiquing my classmates. During my collegiate career, my classes in Political Science and International Affairs were structured around the ability to speak and present to my classmates, professors and professionals in my field. I was required to develop speeches from a paper I had written or a subject I had studied and present it to an audience as large as 50 people. Through literature, examples, classroom experience and practice, I was able to learn and master new techniques of public speaking from the foundation of developing a speech to the execution and presentation of it.

Salsa Dancing

I am trained in Salsa and a variety of dancing. I have taken a number of classes in Salsa dancing and spent six months in the Dominican Republic where I danced with trained Salsa Dancers and took classes in Salsa, Bachata and Merenge.

Spanish

I have been studying Spanish for 15 years with a variety of professors, language partners and tutors including 6 months living in the Dominican Republic. I have been tutoring for about 3 years and working with students from 4 to 40.

Violin

I studied violin with a suzuki trained teacher for 8 years. I have played with youth and adult orchestras for 8 years as well. I have taught violin to elementray and middle school aged students.

A Great Fit for Us!

Serena is tutoring my 4 and 7 year old daughters in Spanish. She has been engaging and is easily able to redirect them onto task over and over again - even though they are at different developmental levels. They find her activities fun and are really learning some Spanish. My girls look forward to our weekly class and I am able to review the information in between sessions based on the activity
