About Clarice

I have four years of classroom teaching experience in high school French. I have a master's degree in French from Middlebury College in Vermont. Nine months of my experience as a graduate student were spent in Paris, France, where I took courses in French language, literature and civilization, as well as researched and completed my master's thesis. I began my teaching career in Bakersfield, CA, and for the past three years, I worked as a high school French teacher at a public charter school in the San Francisco Bay Area, in California. I have experience teaching all levels of French, from levels 1-4, including AP French, and I have helped many of my students successfully prepare for and pass the AP French Exam in the past three years.

My background in teaching and my unique life experiences give me a unique perspective as a tutor. After completing a bachelor's degree in French and International Studies at California Lutheran University, I worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania, West Africa, where I taught English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) to middle school students and directed a mentoring center for girls where I organized after-school tutoring and extra-curricular activities to encourage girls’ education. In the classroom, I learned how to write and effectively teach lesson plans, as well as classroom management skills and how to teach with limited resources. Through my work at the girls’ mentoring center, I further developed my abilities in teaching and my lesson planning skills, learned about community networking, and learned to be more creative in the classroom. My experience teaching English in Mauritania allowed me to apply for a preliminary California single subject teaching credential, and my overall experience as a Peace Corps volunteer gave me the skills necessary to be a resourceful and effective teacher. I am currently working on obtaining my Oregon Teaching License.

As suggested, I very much enjoy working one-on-one with students. I like to ask questions that will lead them to figure out the answer to a question rather when thinking about a question or assignment. I believe that this helps the student to think critically and also begin asking questions themselves about assignments in the future. I believe that a tutor/teacher should be a guide for the student. It is important to me that students understand the content being taught. If the student is not able to answer questions about the material, they may need to review what was taught. I enjoy teaching and review with students, especially French, as I am very passionate about the subject matter.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

I currently hold an MA in French from Middlebury College and earned my BA from California Lutheran University in French and International Studies. I have experience teaching high school French as well as a college-level French conversation course. Additionally, I have studied abroad twice in France, once as an undergraduate and as a graduate student, spent nine months in France writing, completing and defending my masters' thesis. I have also spent time in other Francophone countries, such as Mauritania and Senegal.
