About Liz

I received a B.S. in Elementary Education and a Handicapped Learner Certificate (30 hours post-BA in Special Education from the University of Oregon, one of the country's top three universities in Special Education. My specialty is teaching reading, spelling and writing, although I also enjoy teaching math at the elementary level.

I am very positive, flexible and highly trained in my teaching. I strongly believe in cumulative review, reviewing previously taught materials in subsequent sessions. I always begin with testing the student to see what the exact nature of their difficulties are (i.e. "ea" words, words with blends such as "sl" "br" etc.). I
then build a program that meets their specific needs. However, if you would like me to work with school materials from their present grade levels I can do that also.

For younger children, I like to do a reward system such as using points towards a small prize.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
