Hello, thank you for viewing my profile.

I have over 10 years of experience tutoring students of various ages and backgrounds; including middle, high school, college, and returning adult students. I have worked for tutoring agencies, colleges, and privately. I am comfortable tutoring students one on one, or in groups.

I focus on subjects related to Math, Engineering, and Science. The subjects I tutor are SAT Math, ACT Math, GRE Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus I, Calculus II, and Physics. I also tutor college level electrical engineering course material; this includes: DSP, Digital Systems, DC and AC Circuits, LaPlace & Fourier Transforms, and Electronics. I am also very adept at helping students with their MATLAB, C, and Computer Programming questions.

In addition:
I tutor Finance and Investing concepts on a regular basis - being the manager of a a Private Equity Fund.

Please see my bio and testimonials below. Thank you!

I have been a resident of Portland for over 15 years. I worked for two years tutoring students for SAT, and ACT preparation at the Institute of College Information; a company formerly located on the Marylhurst University campus outside of Lake Oswego, OR. I also privately tutored students in Math during that time.

I possess Bachelor of Science degrees in both Biological Science, and Electrical Engineering (Cum Laude). During college, I tutored undergraduate students; as an employee of the college, privately in groups of one or more, and informally (because if you can't teach it ... you don't know it!).

I have worked as an engineer and technician for most of my life. I have been employed in the biomedical, audio engineering, and electronics industries. I volunteer at Free Geek, and Bikes for Humanity; two great organizations in Portland, OR that empower people, and help the planet. My hobbies are sound recording and mixing, competitive cycling, and nordic skate skiing.

Former Adult Student Leslie A. Writes:
"To Whom It May Concern, Michael J. has been an exemplary tutor to many students, myself included. His patience and knowledge of many subjects allows him to build confidence and knowledge in his students. With his assistance I have been able complete many courses, including Electronic, Circuits I, II and III. I have suggested him to several different students for those who are struggling, each of whom have done very well within their classes. It is my hope that he will continue to use his gifts to tutor others. Respectfully, Leslie A."

Good at explaining concepts with simple terms and visuals.

Mike took the time to explain a new way to memorize the unit circle. It is incredibly useful. Looking forward to further sessions and continued learning with his help. August 27, 2015 Update: Mike worked with me on Calculus nearly every week through the summer. My grades have been excellent and today was preparation for the final. I feel well prepared for it. The help Mike provided by reviewing homework, clarifying concepts and giving me extra material to improve my understanding in several areas has made a huge difference in the outcome of this class. I'd also say he has a very positive outlook which makes him easy to work with. Grade achieved with Mike's help was A. Could not have happened without him.

Well versed and very accommodating

Mike tutored my daughter in pre-calculus, biology, and for her ACTs. He was able to identify the areas where she was struggling and adapt his teaching style to her. Mike has an excellent grasp of mathematical concepts. He was organized for each session and very dependable and accommodating.

Good calculus tutor.

Michael was a good fit for my high school son. His patient, consistent methods of teaching and ability to explain the concepts of calculus gave my son the tools needed to become proficient.

Great Tutor

Mike was great to work with, he took the time to help me figure out the harder calculus problems on my practice quizzes and would finish solving them at home and emailing them to me if it took longer than expected. He was also very flexible with scheduling tutor sessions.

Wonderful tutor, highly recommended

We contacted Michael because he has a background in advanced math and physics. Our son is bright but an underachiever, not liking to do homework in general because he understands concepts and has tested well in the past. However now that he is in AP classes he has to do the homework to succeed on the tests. In addition, our son thinks he can keep all information in his head, so he doesn't write anything down. This has resulted in making unnecessary mistakes in long formulas, and not knowing where to fix the calculation when the answer is wrong. Michael (patiently!) helped our son learn to SLOW DOWN his work process, write everything down, and go back and evaluate all of his answers. Homework that took him a half an hour (if he did it at all!), now was taking two hours with discussions and debates about process, which for my son was great. He respected Michael's knowledge about the subjects, and it made the hours fun as well as instructive. My son is also an athlete, so having a tutor who has an active life and can identify with that characteristic also helped them interact well together. My son just took the SAT, and got a 740 on the math section! Great job Michael!!!

He really knows how to explain Physics

Michael has been great to work with! He is very patient and explains our son's Physics problems in a way that he really can understand and remember when it's test time. He has given our son a real confidence boost and we appreciate it.

Great tutor

Very knowledgeable and patient plus brought material for me to keep and review. I would recommend him for circuit analysis.

Great Tutor.

Michael is an excellent tutor. He is trying very hard to get my grandson up to speed. Any problems we have are with our grandson and not Michael. He is trying to get him to the point where he will have confidence in his ability to pass his class.
