About Joshua

I will be graduating from PSU in 2012 with a B.A. in Applied Linguistics and a TESL certificate. I have been involved in tutoring native and non-native speakers of English for over ten years. My sessions always include ongoing assessment and I make every effort to get my students the tools they need to excel.
I enjoy all types of English tutoring, including paper editing, public speaking, paper writing, reading, conversational English, and accent modification.

I have had a knack for understanding and using the English language since I was a young boy. For some unknown reason, my brain came to acquire an intuitive grasp on the skills of reading, writing and speaking, which are all art forms and not merely subjects of study, at a fairly early age. This was not the case concerning other skills like drawing and dance. I must work hard at even the simplest sketches, and any dance partner of mine will certainly have their patience tried. However, lacking preternatural talent in some areas has only caused me to appreciate the ones I do have more and to come to a greater admiration of the human mind's dexterity and potential. And I have come to realize, also, the creative and graceful qualities of many areas of study. Just as there is a beauty to ballet and painting, so there is a pleasing aesthetic to the elegance we find in the sciences and even in mathematics. From this less pedantic and more imaginative perspective I am able to meet each student at his or her level and, if I am successful, to leave him or her with a deeper and more lasting understanding of language and communication.

My interest in language and education was cemented during my time in northern England, where I lived for nearly three years. Though I did not fully realize it at the time, in retrospect I realize that my encounter with the British had been filled with one linguistic conundrum after another. In the years that followed my return to the States I became aware of the idea that language was not what I once thought it to be, and also what a desperately important function it serves. Having lived through the frustration of not understanding and not being understood in a community of people who could not imagine why this was, I now have a taste of what it is like to struggle in an area most find easy. It is through experience and striving against hindrance that we learn the patience it requires to truly add to the lives of others. It is my hope that I can bring my students to a place of less frustration and greater understanding and ease in the areas they feel are preventing them from being better understood.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I completed a two-year program at Calvary Chapel Bible College, a non-accredited Christian college, in Biblical Theology. The perspective of this theology was relatively conservative, religiously and politically speaking, but the focus of study was the inductive study of the text of the King James Bible. Little focus was placed on church history post 5th century A.D. Much more focus was placed on the history of the Jews prior to the advent of Christ, as well as the religious and political situation at the time of Christ and just after his death.

ESL/ESOL

I recently earned a TESL certificate, which qualifies me to teach English to speakers of other languages. Part of this certification involved many hours of observing and teaching ESL classes in the community and at the university level. There was an optional practicum component, which I opted to complete. My assignment included teaching a small class of Vietnamese-speaking middle school students 4 hours a week for 7 weeks. I have tutored speakers of various languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Japanese, Italian, and Thai. Second Language Acquisition and language teaching methods were two other key parts of my degree.

Reading

My experience as a reading tutor includes working with children and adults. During my teaching practicum at PSU I taught a class of 11 Vietnamese children age 10-15 for 7 weeks. I have also tutored many students and professionals in English at various reading levels and with various language backgrounds over the last 3 years. As part of my certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, I observed and practice taught in a class geared toward reading comprehension for international university students.
