About Mandy

During my years teaching English literature, at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, I quickly discovered that the most rewarding and effective moments between student and instructor occur in one-to-one meetings. The tutoring environment is the ideal classroom, where a single student’s learning needs, academic desires and questions can be fully catered to, fulfilled and explored.

I have worked with first-year university students, middle school students, all levels of high school students, and older adults. My advanced education, extensive experience, sincere respect for my students, and genuine love and enthusiasm for literature and learning make me an effective and valuable educator.

I possess both a Master's degree and a BA in English literature, with a minor degree in History; and as the only member of my immediate family to have earned a college degree, I am acutely aware of how empowering and essential an education is. I also know what a struggle the learning process can be. This struggle, however, can be an enjoyable one. With the help of a quality instructor, the uphill journey of learning can be thoroughly rewarding. I fully understand how important and infinitely valuable a head-start and a detail-oriented guide are in such a journey. I am that guide, and I am that teacher.

I provide instruction in various levels of grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, complex analysis and contextual understanding of literature, and writing composition skills. Additionally, I have tutored and worked with ESOL students. Furthermore, I have earned a minor degree in History and therefore enjoy routinely helping my students with their understanding of History and Social Studies assignments.

My teaching style and my hours are flexible and accommodating to the individual needs of each student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am qualified to teach this subject because I have a Master's degree in English literature, and over 5 years of tutoring English to an array of students, at a variety of levels. It's the subject I specialize in, and that I am the most passionate about.

ESL/ESOL

I have extensive experience in a comprehensive approach to tutoring students in ESOL. I focus on conversational, reading and writing skills. I use vocabulary and grammar excessive in combination with writing and reading comprehension in order for the learner to obtain knowledge in all of the necessary facets of the English language. I have worked with middle school, high school, and college students in this field. So I am adept at making adjustments in regard to skill level, attention span, and personal interests and goals.

Grammar

I am qualified to teach grammar because it was an integral qualification of my college degree. As an English major, my work consisted mainly of writing lengthy papers, all of which required excellent grammar and writing skills. I also have over 5 years of tutoring experience teaching ESOL, grammar, writing and reading, so I have had consistent practice at teaching int his field.

Literature

I am familiar with teaching a wide variety of literature. I enjoy and have worked with middle school novels and more complex college level texts (and theoretical works).

Microsoft Excel

I have many years of working with Excel. As a student teacher, I calculated grades on a spreadsheet; and my current job as a legal assistant relies on it heavily.

Microsoft Word

I have many years of working with MS Word as a student; and my current job as a legal assistant relies on it heavily. I have also done research work which has used some of the more advance group editing aspects of word, as well as the ability to link Excel and Word together.

Proofreading

I am qualified to proofread because I have many years experience at it - not only with my own lengthy graduate papers, but with those of my cohort as well. In addition, I have tutored many students, over the past few years, in the writing of their college entrance essays. This has kept my editing skills sharp, and it is something that I greatly enjoy.

Reading

I can work with a variety of levels of students in this subject, especially in regards to close reading, vocabulary and how to understand and comprehend various forms of literature. I am extremely knowledgeable in not only comprehending literature, but in how to properly analyze and write about it.

SAT Reading

I'm experienced in tutoring for the SAT prep and have a Master's in Literature.

Study Skills

I can help students in discovering accessible approaches to basic/practical study skills - particularly in their approach to writing essays, creative writing, reading differing pieces of literature or history, and understanding the grammar and vocabulary of what they are reading and writing. I have extensive experience in this field, both as a graduate student (firsthand) and as a private tutor and college level writing/literature instructor.
Organization of physical space, time management and planning the writing process are just some of the beginning approaches to making the most of a student's study and productive work time.

Vocabulary

I am qualified to teach vocabulary because I have over 5 years experience in this field. As a private tutor, vocabulary is not only a focus subject, but an integral means to an end as an essential tool in teaching writing, reading and complex thought.

Writing

I can work with all levels of writers and help you to discover ways to make writing interesting and fun.
