About Scott

Hi! My name is Scott, and I am very excited to tell you a bit about my teaching experience.

After earning my master's degree in teaching in 2012, I've taught math in the 7th and 8th grades in Vancouver and, most recently Woodland Washington. Prior to that, I volunteered at Irvington Elementary School (now K-8) for ten years in various capacities. During that time, I helped students with reading, writing, and math as well as run a chess club with as many as 62 students.

In addition...

I've taught Organic Chemistry at Castleton State College.

I've taught Tae Kwon Do at USWC Tae Kwon Do (Hollywood).

I've tutored individuals and groups of students.

I seek constructivist methods to help develop the student's understanding of new challenges. In order for this to be effective, I must understand the student's thinking perspective. This enables me to ask good questions and understand the answers that I'm given. Good questions, on my part, are those which elicit answers that open the student's mind to me. Answers then become much more than just right or wrong. They become windows for me to understand the way the student is thinking, right now, about a given problem. When I understand how a student is thinking, I can help him or her build the path toward discovery and understanding.

I'm looking forward to doing that with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

Chemistry often seems like a mystery to students, but it shouldn't be that way! I can help demystify a truly interesting subject, helping you go from dreading it to real curiosity! Let me help take away the confusion and allow you to build real understanding of the building blocks of our world.

Chess

I have taught chess at Irvington Elementary School for 8 years as the head instructor. I supervised up to 60 students per year. In recent years, we added the Asian strategy game, Go. This is another excellent "true skill" mind game that can develop cognitive and concentration abilities in its players. In chess, I reached the level of USCF 1820 and in Go, 4 kyu. These levels are sufficient to teach beginners and intermediates in both games.

Organic Chemistry

I hold a masters in Chemistry from Dartmouth College where I studied under Dr. Gribble. My thesis involved the synthesis natural products which might have medicinal properties. After graduation, I taught at Castleton State College in Vermont as an adjunct professor, where I was responsible for the organic chemistry class and lab.

QuickBooks

As an active user of Quicken for over 15 years, I'm ready to show you how it's done! Get control of your finances and know where your money goes. You'll learn how to make budgets, download translations from credit cards or checking accounts and create reports. Knowing how you spend your money is the first step to saving more!

Study Skills

I am in my final few weeks of my Master's in Teaching degree from Concordia University. I have participated in classes in adolescent and education psychology as well as many methods courses. I also have experience teaching at Frontier Middle School and Gresham High School. I am highly qualified to help develop study skills in all children of all ages.

Great Tutor

My son had a chemistry final. Scott quickly assessed where my son needed help and focused their time together on this material. As my son said: "Scott would not move on until I understood the material".
