Portland State University (Japanese Int'l Study)
Konnichiwa, my name is Marissa. I lived in Japan for 6 + years and really enjoy speaking Japanese. I studied Japanese since high school through university and was accepted on a scholarship study program for one year in Sapporo. I went back to Japan numerous times and worked there for 5 years teaching English. I taught adults and children for 2 years, and then taught for 3 years at an international preschool. During my time abroad I have taught and lived in other Asian countries and I am willing to share my experiences to make your life a little easier!
I am able to teach English and Japanese. I tested and passed level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. I am able to carry on a conversation in Japanese, and my goal is to help you become comfortable speaking and not worry about making mistakes.
I especially enjoy teaching children, learning from a young age can make a huge difference with their learning ability. I'm very creative and use a variety of teaching methods like cards and games to enhance their learning.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught English as a Second Language abroad in Japan and Korea to adults and children, and locally as well. I have also taught English to refugees locally in Portland and Seattle, and worked in the ESL Office at a university.
I am very comfortable carrying on a conversation in Japanese. My reading and writing are pretty good, and I have always enjoyed learning Kanji. I hold a Level 2 Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate.
I use Excel at work, and love what you can do with it! I used to only really use Word, but after taking some classes, I really appreciate the subtle differences between the two. I am the go to gal at work for figuring out how to better documents. I never take no for an answer as I believe Excel knows all!
I used PowerPoint for school presentations as well at work conferences. I am able to create and edit presentations. Having slides to go off of makes presenting topics much easier and I can show you how!
I have used Word for everything, for my own personal use, to school and work. I am the go to person for questions and fixing up documents. I know many of the hot keys to help you become faster and efficient when typing and editing. I have taught word processing skills to adults and children.
One of my favorite pastimes is reading and being able to help others read. I have taught reading to foreigners and refugees.
