Hi!

My name is Kate. I really enjoy working with students and helping them learn. I'm a special education teacher. I did my Masters in Elementary Education with a certification in Special Education. I have worked students with disabilities such as learning disabilities, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, emotional behavioral disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders both in a classroom setting and a tutoring setting. My name is Kate. I really enjoy working with students and helping them learn. I'm a special education teacher. I did my Masters in Elementary Education with a certification in Special Education. I have worked students with disabilities such as learning disabilities, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, emotional behavioral disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders both in a classroom setting and a tutoring setting. I also interact with students without disabilities on a regular basis at school. I'm very familiar with the Common Core Standards and the typical teaching strategies and language used in schools.

I have tutored for several years and have enjoyed all of my tutoring experiences. I have worked with students ages 7 to 16 on reading, math, writing, study skills, research skills, and general homework help. I have worked with the parents of the students that I tutor on making sure that their children are getting what they need to be successful at school. I have seen students make fantastic academic progress and take more enjoyment out of learning. I have see them gain more confidence in their academic abilities.

I pride myself on making learning fun for the students that I work with. I help students find their strengths and build their confidence. Fun, games, and laughter are an important part of my tutoring style because I like to show students that learning can be enjoyable. I get to know every student with whom I work. It is important to me to have a positive and trusting relationship with each student. I can tutor both individually and in small groups.

I’m happy to do a free meet and greet with you before starting tutoring, just to make sure that it feels like it will be a good fit.

I have taught special education for the past 5 years. I love teaching math and I even do the math teaching for both the students the 3rd-5th grade class (the class I teach) and the Kindergarten-2nd class (that my teaching partner teaches). I have a lot of experience with teaching and providing continuing practice with basic math skills. I'm good helping kids to develop a strong foundation in number skills and place value that they'll be able to rely on as they delve into increasingly challenging math concepts. I teach math concepts in a very visual and engaging ways. Most of the students in my class consider math to be their favorite subject, because they've become so successful in it.

I believe in a balanced literacy model with a mix of multi-sensory phonics and phonemic awareness instruction, practice with patterned texts and visual supports, high frequency word practice, and opportunities for read alouds for developing

I have worked with many students with ADHD of different ages. I have tutored students with ADHD in a general education classroom, a learning center, and private tutoring. I have helped these students learn strategies for sustaining attention, controlling impulsivity, breaking tasks up into manageable parts, and finding ways to relate to assignments and make them more interesting. I have ADHD inattentive type so I have personal experience using these strategies and can relate to the challenges that come with having ADHD.

I have worked with many students on the Autism Spectrum in the school setting and in tutoring. In my job, as a special education teacher, I have had many students on the Autism Spectrum. I find that I have been able to reach these students and connect with them in a way that they are comfortable with. I have been able to find ways to motivate each student and have enjoyed working with them. I have gained an understanding of the components common to kids on the spectrum and also that there is a lot of variation between each kid on the spectrum. I did my Masters in Elementary Education with a certification in General Special Education.

I have completed the level 1 course for Orton Gillingham on multi-sensory reading strategies. This is known to be the most effective reading intervention for students with dyslexia. I’ve worked with students with dyslexia throughout my career as a special educator and have helped them to make significant progress in reading and writing.

I have a Washington teaching certification for special education (K-12) and a year of experience teaching special education in Washington. I did an internship in a learning center for 4th and 5th graders. During this internship I worked with students with learning disabilities, on the Autism spectrum, intellectual disabilities, ADHD and behavior identifications. I have worked as an educational assistant for a student with behavior challenges. In this position, I also worked with students on the Autism spectrum and students with learning disabilities.

I swam competitively for 9 years. I’ve taught swim lessons to swimmers of a variety of different levels. I love to be in the water and gradually increase kids confidence in the water and swimming stamina. I’m happy to work with brand new swimmers, swimmers looking to learn more techniques, and swimmers looking to build the stamina needed to join a swim team.

Very personable with kids.

When I asked my 7 year old daughter how the lesson went she said, "Best time reading ever, dad." This from a kid who dreads reading time, so I was very pleased.
