About Katie

I have always enjoyed helping others learn. I attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 2011 with a 3.5 GPA and a double major in Mathematics and International Peace Studies. After graduation, I taught upper-level math courses at a high school in Central Florida. (My favorite was AP Calculus!) I am now a professional tutor and specialize in tutoring students in mathematics (basic math, algebra I and II, geometry, precalculus, calculus) and test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, GED). In addition to teaching experience, I have years of tutoring experience with various companies including Kumon, Sylvan, and Upward Bound as well as over 50 private students.

I also teach piano lessons to beginning students out of my home. I took piano lessons for eight years and have studied classical and jazz. I have taught piano lessons to 12 elementary piano students. I use Faber & Faber lesson books, and I stress proper technique and music theory as well as helping students to find their passion in making music by experimenting with different styles such as classical, jazz, and pop music.

I love tutoring and teaching and I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your goals, whether that be preparing for a test, completing homework, raising your grade, or a better and more thorough understanding of the material. I have a relaxed and warm personality, and I am able to foster an environment where students feel safe to try, make mistakes, and truly learn. Learning and helping others to learn is my passion and I look forward to sharing that with you.

And, a little about my self, I'm a recent Portland transplant, having grown up in the Midwest but I've lived all over the country. I love yoga, gardening, biking, hiking, making music, and teaching.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I am a former teacher of Honors Algebra 2. This class can be fun, let's work together to make it so! We will pinpoint your weak areas, use lots of examples, reinforce learning, and have fun doing it.

Calculus

After receiving a 5 on my own AP Calculus BC exam in high school, I went on to major in mathematics in college. I taught AP Calculus AB to high school students and have tutored many students in the subject. This is a fascinating and fun subject, let's work together!

Turned my son's Geometry grade from a "D" to an "A"!

Katie was a very professional tutor for my son in his first year of high school. He was struggling with Geometry and Spanish as a freshman. Due to Katie's great tutoring skills my son is an honor roll student. I was very pleased with Katie targeting his weak areas and turning his grades around!!! Job well done!
