About Ava

I have been teaching reading, writing, and social studies to students in grades 5-12 since 2008. I most recently taught 5th grade humanities, 7th grade English, and 8th grade social studies at a Medina, WA independent school.

I believe that anyone, no matter their past struggles, can find their inner reader and experience the joy in books! By identifying any reading roadblocks and addressing them while building confidence through books at an appropriate level and a combination of independent and shared reading, I've had great success both helping remedial readers catch up and helping advanced readers accelerate their progress.

Because of my social studies background, I excel at teaching both expository (report-type) and creative writing, and have trained at Columbia University's Reading and Writing Project. From struggling with sentence construction, for which I have language-investigation approaches that are fun and challenging, to supporting an argument through a longer piece, I can get you to your writing goals.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's degree in adolescent social studies education which includes substantive work on child development. During my time as a substitute teacher from 2008-2010 I primarily subbed in k-2 classrooms, and I have been a classroom teacher for 3rd grade and a humanities teacher for 5th grade.

I have an MA in adolescent education. My focus was in social studies education, which includes a sizable amount of work on writing, research, and communication. I have a strong public speaking background and am a bit of a grammar nerd. I love helping people become effective readers, writers, and speakers and feel the confidence that comes with mastery of the English language.

As an English and social studies teacher, one of the most important things I do is help students learn to effectively edit their papers with an eye for conventions, style, and attention to the assignment. I will work with you to make sure your current assignment looks great and you leave with new skills to apply to future work.

I have taught reading to grades k-12 during my eight years as a teacher. I have had great success coaxing reluctant readers to build their confidence (and improve their test scores) through reading aloud together, discussing books, and modeling text engagement. Reading should start as a joy, and when students achieve competence at reading for fun it easily translates to doing the hard work of content-based reading across subject areas.
