About Nathan

For nine months, I worked as a tutor at the MTSU Writing Center. My goal as a tutor is to help learners succeed by useful strategies for reading and writing. I believe that revising and editing skills are vital to the writer. It is rare that a first draft of any piece of writing will ever be "complete," and as a tutor, I enjoy offering feedback on what the writer can do to improve their piece of writing.

Besides my experience as a tutor, I have had teaching certification in English (grades 7-12) and have a Bachelor of Arts in English and Secondary Education and a Master of Arts in English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, both in English. Also, from August 2012 to May 2013, I worked as a tutor at the Writing Center at Middle Tennessee State University in a a graduate assistantship program.

General Music

I have a comprehensive understanding of the history of music and can identify the periods of Baroque, Classical and Romantic. I also have extensive knowledge of Popular Music. I can elaborate, for instance, on the origin of popular genres. For instance, progressive rock is rooted in jazz.

Grammar

During my time as a writing tutor at Middle Tennessee State University, several students had recurring grammatical errors, such as sentence fragments. My job was to make them aware of these errors and how to identify them in the future. I also gave grammar lessons to students who were English as a Second Language.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for over 11 years and play both acoustic and electric. I am able to play every basic chord and also know playing strategies such as alternating thumb or arpeggio. I also know how to play using alternate tunings.

Literature

I have studied literature at both the undergraduate and graduate college level. As an M.A. student, I completed a thesis on Charles Bukowski's first five novels. As a Writing Assistant, I also led a workshop on how to write essays on literature.

Proofreading

One of my duties as a university writing tutor was to help students work on their proofreading. One strategy suggested to make students active in catching their own mistakes was asking them to read their piece aloud. Students would also mark up their writing themselves.

Reading

As a teacher certified in English 7-12, I can teach Reading at both the middle and high school level. I have student taught in a 7th grade reading classroom. As a university writing tutor, I also worked with several students who had difficulties with reading comprehension.

Songwriting

I have written over 200 songs and have released an album of originals. I understand a basic song structure: the verse/chorus (A section) and the bridge (B section). I also various strategies, especially what to do if the lyrics are written first or if the music is written first.

Writing

As a tutor who used to work at a university writing lab, it has been my primary goal to develop students' writing skills. I specifically teach strategies for how to plan a formal essay, such as a thesis statement and an outline. Overall, my goal is to help students become aware of their strengths/weaknesses as writers.
