As a person who has worked as a professional educator and photographer, I strive for excellence. That is my guiding principle. Professional skills are important, but listening and observation are critical in assisting someone's learning process.
My master's degree in education was comprised of a year's teaching bracketed by course work focused on practical classroom application. My final project was a tutoring program I created between my third-graders and a kindergarten classroom. In my classroom, I created a variety of materials to supplement any textbooks used, understanding that each child has individual learning needs. Phonics might work for some and sight words could open the door to learning for others, to cite one example of my classroom approach.
Language has been a continuing concern of mine. I see misspelling and grammatical mistakes everywhere, including national ad campaigns, web sites and personal communications. I would like to contribute by helping individuals improve in this area.
Photography is another enduring passion of mine. I have decades of experience in photography for newspapers and magazines as well as personal projects. Equipment is helpful in capturing an image but not the critical element. Technique, developing an eye for composition, determination and people skills can take a person farther in making captivating images. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a master's degree in education and used phonics within an overall approach to teaching reading. Both purchased and teacher-made materials were incorporated in my efforts.
I graduated from the University of Missouri's Journalism program with a newspaper photography emphasis. I have worked at a number of papers in Missouri and Oregon, accumulating 30+ years of experience and skills. I am also experienced in studio and location lighting. I have done photography for publications, weddings, PR events and individuals using film and digital cameras in a variety of camera formats as I photograph people, places and objects.
