I am so excited about the opportunity to work with students in Portland! I've taken a 60-hour course in Orton-Gillingham (training especially for working with students with Dyslexia) and have had significant tutoring experience in this specific area. Before moving to Portland, I worked with a company in Maryland using Orton-Gillingham to work one-on-one with students--teaching reading and writing, as well as executive functioning. My husband has all the same training and is an Orton tutor as well. We have different strengths, so let us know what you need, and one of us would love to help you!
I was home-schooled for most of my younger years--learning self-motivation, discipline, and how to figure things out on my own. I then received a B.S. in Psychology and an M.A. in Human Services from Liberty University. I was a graduate assistant through graduate school--grading papers and other assignments for the Psychology Internship class. I also spent a year in China, teaching at a pre-school there and studying Chinese on the side; as well as a year in Ireland, working with adults who have Dyslexia, teaching reading and writing. After that I worked at Bowman Educational Services--the Orton-Gillingham-based company I mentioned in Maryland--for over 2 years. I believe all of these experiences will be beneficial in making for a great tutoring experience together. If you have any questions, please ask! I'd love to talk with you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Completed Fran Bowman's 60-hour Orton-Gillingham course in MD through Bowman Educational Services, Inc. Received certificate.
I wasn't an English major, but my college English professor told me I should be one. I had a great English teacher in high school who really helped me love the subject and get a good handle on English in general. If you need help in this area, I would enjoy working with the subject again!
I've grown up using computers and have enjoyed working with them and figuring out new, fun ways to use them for neat projects. Through this exploration, I have become pretty comfortable with the different programs and love teaching others what I've learned!
So I have never wanted to be 'that person' who is always correcting someone's grammar, but I am always doing it in my head. While working on my Masters at Liberty, I was a graduate assistant and graded papers for Psychology students. During this time, my obsessive compulsive grammar skills were honed, :) and I do just enjoy grammar in general.
I submit that high school, college, and graduate school are a perfect resume alone for Microsoft Word. Word is the program used for almost all papers, of which I have written my fair share. Learning the ins and outs of this program are necessary for convenience's sake if you are going to do any amount of schooling.
I took a 60-hour course in Orton Gillingham, specializing in teaching people with dyslexia. A huge part of this involves Phonics, so it is one of my specialties. No matter what age, gaining a good grasp on Phonics is crucial.
I started piano lessons at home as a child under my mom, then studied under two different teachers going into my teenage years. In high school, I played the piano for my church, and continued to do so with another church during college. I now only play for enjoyment, but I absolutely love the instrument and receive so much joy just playing by myself. I learned to read music in my lessons, but moved more into playing chords/playing by ear with the churches.
I was a graduate assistant for 2 years while getting my Masters in Human Services. During this time, I helped oversee the Psychology Internship class--which included grading the 10-page internship paper. I graded hundreds of college papers during this time, so proofreading is my specialty! :)
Reading was always my favorite subject growing up, and I still love reading a good book when I have the time. The 60-hour Orton Gillingham course I took focused largely on reading, and the tutoring I have done offers some of the most experience in reading.
