BA English (Graduate Coursework)
I have been tutoring students in SAT prep for 6 years, and general English tutoring for 10. I taught remedial High School English. I'm a writer, published in 3 poetry anthologies, several published Book reviews and articles in small local publications.
I love tutoring, and I regard the SAT as a valuable test for several reasons. The SAT offers students the opportunity to practice college level skills and to rehearse for test taking in general. Writing under pressure, reading for content, using advanced vocabulary, and reading to edit are all part of the SAT, which if practiced in advance will increase a students overall college level English skills.
I teach from The College Board Official SAT Manual. It contains 8 full tests as well as general information about question types, scoring and all other aspects of the test.
I welcome ESL students. I speak Spanish, and enjoy teaching ESL in any demographic situation.
I am a mom, and I like little kids, so K-12 is another area in which I have tutoring experience. I have a current K-12 certification to teach in Oregon and Washington, which also means I have clear and current background checks for both states, plus 2 private tutoring businesses.
I welcome any age and any ability level. My students and I have a good time too! I have been tutoring students in SAT prep for 6 years, and general English tutoring for 10. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I passed the CBEST test in order to qualify for an Oregon Teaching License.
I have 15 years of experience teaching and tutoring grades K-6 in reading and language arts.
My experience with phonics and reading is a crucial aspect of the work I do with students. My students have fun Reading aloud, sounding out words, practicing spelling and writing original sentences.
Language Arts is a core subject in secondary school with skill connections to all other subjects, and then to most jobs in future careers.
I help students build confidence in expressing themselves in writing. We work with words and syntax. My tutoring focuses on learning specific higher level vocabulary, recognizing major grammar issues, paraphrasing and finding the main idea, and brainstorming original thoughts. These are all important steps toward improving study skills, as well as test prep and career habits.
I use positive encouragement, as well as specific suggestions to make the study process flow easily. My students and I have fun writing and the time flies in our sessions!
