I am a retired teacher and school counselor. My entire career revolves around children and helping them be successful. I am a retired teacher and school counselor. My entire career revolves around children and helping them be successful. Even now as a mother and grandmother, I enjoy nothing more than spending time with a child to make learning fun, engaging and meaningful. Learning can energize, motivate, and spark curiosity. I like to meet with the student and parents, to discuss goals and how to best meet those goals. Then we work from there. Since I've worked with so many students in such a wide range of subjects and ages, I have an enormous wealth of information, strategies, and approaches. Because of my extensive background in education as a teacher and counselor, I can navigate the school system and jargon. This is helpful at school meetings and special education situations. I've helped many students fill gaps in academic subjects, build confidence for achievement. Lately, I've worked with students for SAT and ACT preparation and college applications. I've assisted kids to catch up after long absences from school or review tough material. Sometimes it just helps to reteach or pre-teach complicated concepts. I have a complete collection of materials for successful study strategies for note-taking, test-taking, reading for meaning, time management, organization, and efficient and successful learning strategies for all ages. Let me help your student now.

Let's talk together soon so we can begin the journey to successful, intriguing, and enjoyable learning.

Thank you for this opportunity.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Since I worked with students in elementary and middle school as a teacher and school counselor for so many years, I am well qualified to assist students in public speaking skills. I helped students of all ages, including adults make presentations for class assignments. This task was part of their Oregon State Standards. I also assisted students involved in ESL at middle school, high school and even college level so they could graduate out of the ESL program. With my assistance the students researched and wrote their presentation, then practiced the oral presentation. We managed nervousness, voice modulation and visual aids as well as audience eye contact. I am happy to say that with my coaching all students met the criteria.

I have successfully completed 33 years of working as a teacher, school counselor, study coach and tutor. Most of those years were working with multi-culturally diverse populations. I have taught Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hispanic, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese and Arabic students. We have worked on learning everything from basic reading to mastering skills for the GRE or MCAT for entry into graduate school. Thankfully, I have such a strong background in reading and learning practices that I can help any student acquire the necessary knowledge to reach their full potential. Studying for the TOEFL and TOEIC and various other English mastery assessments are just one part of my repertoire. I can provide instruction for reading, writing, listening, and speaking in formal language as well as colloquial usage.

Spelling

Spelling is one of those subjects that doesn't respond to direct instruction. The talent to spell is believed to be somewhat inherited. However, the way you improve spelling is through phonics, reading, and writing and doing lots of all three. A good reader usually is a good speller. The best way to practice spelling is through using words in writing and reading, not taking spelling tests. There are a few important rules in phonics that will make a huge difference in writing plus being very proficient at dictionary use which is now on the nearest phone or computer. Let's learn those phonics rules to save time!

Study Skills

Over the years I've spent many evenings working with students from elementary to college age helping them get organized for school success. It is a matter of talking, listening, planning and problem solving to come up with a unique system that works for each individual person. The strategies usually fall into five general areas: time management, binder/notebook organization, note taking, studying for and taking tests and planning long range assignments. Some of these techniques help students continue their success into their adult work life. I have to be careful that I don't organize things the way I would manage them. It is not my system; it is a system for each individual student. I think the reason I am a great resource for this task is that I am organized but more importantly as a teacher and counselor I have helped innumerable students set up a plan that works for them. It's not rocket science but when it works it is as smooth, beautiful and as successful as a rocket launch!

Literature,

Literature

Literature qualifications mean being able to assist a student read, appreciate and analyze the written language in all its various forms and formats. This study of language and literature is designed to get a learner reading books, analyzing theories, critiquing prose and verse, and taking a more critical look at the signs and words surrounding us every day. It involves careful instruction in developing proficiency as a reader in order to comprehend the material in a fluent and holistic manner. Then the aim is to get students thinking creatively and analytically about the material and respond to it by reflection, assessment and synthesizing in some form of written and/or spoken English.

I have taught SAT classes and helped many many students improve their test scores over the years. I use a holistic approach to the verbal part of the test. We begin by vocabulary study through making connections to the words and their meanings to other information the students know. Memorizing scores of isolated words just does not work but using the context to understand meanings and connections does. I teach careful analysis of the reading passages and answer choices so the answers become more easily obvious. At the same time I encourage my students to take practice tests to build test stamina so they do not suffer from fatigue and stress on the day of the test. We do the same things with the essay portion of the exam. Continued practice build proficiency, confidence and stamina. I also work with my students to reduce stress and build confidence and a sense of relaxation because that helps with the thinking process. I am proud to say that my students do very well on the exam and are more than happy with their end results. If there is time I encourage them to always take the test again because most often their scores will show even better results. I am so proud of their achievements and I am so happy I can be part of their success story.

I am happy to say I have helped many students improve their SAT verbal scores. We focus on vocabulary development, not by memorizing thousands of words but learning how to associate roots, prefixes and suffixes and connect word meanings and usages. For the essay I provide my students with a framework that is a "no fail" system. For the other types of reading questions, it is all a matter of learning what types of questions are typical, watching for essential words and question values. This test is a marathon and it requires training just like a marathon race. I am an effective marathon coach for the SAT. It is such a great pleasure for me to coach students for success and then help them write their applications for their first choice colleges!

As a counselor one year I directed a multi-cultural fair which showcased our fifteen different cultures in our elementary school building. We featured language, native dress, languages, food and traditions from each demographic for the students, parents and community to enjoy. Now that's social studies!

Whatever it is that your want to do with fabric or fiber arts, I can teach advise and have fun with you too.

Expert for teaching foreign student.

She taught my two sons with patience and smiling. She taught them how to survive in an American elementary school! That was so practical and very important to foreign kids who just settled in the US. She connected with the kids' elementary school teacher, and she got the information on what kids should learn for the new school. Thank you, Mary Ellen E.!

Happy with first visit

We have only had one visit so far, but the lesson went very well. My 9-year-old daughter likes her and seems more confident in math just after one visit. Mary Ellen is very sweet and has good ideas to engage kids.

Welcoming and patient.

We were lucky to find Mary Ellen. My eight year old needs help catching up with reading and writing, she is in second grade. She also has a delay in her speech. Mary Ellen is warm and welcoming and keeps my eight year old engaged and interested in her tutoring session. In fact, she loves going to see Mary Ellen. We have already seen improvement in reading after just two sessions!

Excellent woman

Mary Ellen is a very sweet compassionate lady. She was very patient with my very active squarmey son and really helped him feel better about reading and writting in just one lesson. We are so grateful for more lessons with mary ellen and her wonderful work that she does for my son.

Good at de-stressing students

My student was in a really stressful state over her repeated attempt at the SAT. Mary Ellen was great at calming her down and giving her strategies to deal with the stress. Thanks.

Great Tutor for my 2nd Grader

My 2nd grader attends a magnet school and was struggling to keep up with Math in the short amount of time allocated in the school day. We initially saw Mary Ellen to primarily help with Math and handwriting skills. The handwriting skills improved almost immediately, and Mary Ellen worked very hard with my daughters math teacher to find out where we needed to work. Her math teacher even commented to me that she has never worked with such a thorough tutor. She also worked with her on general study skills which is an ongoing battle for many parents and children. I feel my daughter is now able to apply some of these disciplines to 3rd grade when she starts which has a much higher homework volume. Mary Ellen was very easy to work with and thoroughly engaged my child during their time together, and I always had a good idea of where they were at after each lesson. Thanks Mary Ellen!

Delight to be around!

I needed to raise one of my SAT scores, so I started studying with Mary Ellen. I haven't received the new scores yet, but I went into the test with a new confidence. I highly recommend her!!
