About Mary Ellen

I am a retired teacher and school counselor. My entire career revolved around children and helping them be successful. Even now as a mother and grandmother I enjoy nothing more than spending time with a child to make learning fun, engaging and meaningful. Learning can be fun, engaging and self-satisfying. I like to meet the student and parents, talk about what is needed, what the goals are and do a quick assessment as to the child's strengths. Then we work from there. Since I've worked with so many students in such a wide-range of subjects I have a huge wealth of information, strategies and approaches. Because of my extensive background in education as a teacher and counselor I can navigate the school system and jargon. This is particularly helpful at school meetings and special education situations. I've helped many students fill gaps in academic subjects, build confidence for achievement. Lately I've worked with students for SAT and ACT preparation and college applications. I've assisted kids catch-up after long absences from school or review difficult material. Sometimes it just helps to reteach or pre-teach complicated concepts. I have a whole collection of materials for successful study strategies for note taking, test taking, reading for meaning, time management, organization and efficient and successful learning strategies for all ages. Let me help your student now.

Lets talk together soon so we can begin the journey to successful, engaging and enjoyable learning.

Thank you for this opportunity.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I taught elementary grades 1-8 for 27 years either as a classroom teacher, a TAG specialist or a school counselor. During the summers I often worked as a reading specialist, a TAG specialist or a resource specialist. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Educations and a Masters degree in Counseling and Psychology with a special certification in TAG and a Reading Endorsement.
With that kind of a experience and education background I have expertise working with student with special needs which include ADD/ADHD.
These people are some of the brightest, most creative energetic and enthusiastic learners we have in our schools. I love working with them! I helped them learn time management skills, organizational strategies, relaxation methods, and general coping mechanisms. I actively worked with my students so they learned that this is not a disability but management challenge; certainly not an excuse for failure! I am pleased to say that both my students and I were very successful.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught elementary grades 1-8 for 27 years either as a classroom teacher, a TAG specialist or a school counselor. During the summers I often worked as a reading specialist, a TAG specialist or a resource specialist. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Educations and a Masters degree in Counseling and Psychology with a special certification in TAG and a Reading Endorsement.

ESL/ESOL

I have successfully completed 33 years of working as a teacher, school counselor, study coach and tutor. Most of those years were working with multi-culturally diverse populations. I have taught Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hispanic, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese and Arabic students. We have worked on learning everything from basic reading to mastering skills for the GRE or MCAT for entry into graduate school. Thankfully, I have such a strong background in reading and learning practices that I can help any student acquire the necessary knowledge to reach their full potential.

Studying for the TOEFL and TOEIC and various other English mastery assessments are just one part of my repertoire. I can provide instruction for reading, writing, listening, and speaking in formal language as well as colloquial usage.

Public Speaking

Since I worked with students in elementary and middle school as a teacher and school counselor for so many years, I am well qualified to assist students in public speaking skills. I helped students of all ages, including adults make presentations for class assignments. This task was part of their Oregon State Standards. I also assisted students involved in ESL at middle school, high school and even college level so they could graduate out of the ESL program. With my assistance the students researched and wrote their presentation, then practiced the oral presentation. We managed nervousness, voice modulation and visual aids as well as audience eye contact. I am happy to say that with my coaching all students met the criteria.

Reading

I taught elementary grades 1-8 for 27 years either as a classroom teacher, a TAG specialist or a school counselor. During the summers I worked as a reading specialist, a TAG specialist or a resource specialist. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Educations and a Masters degree in Counseling and Psychology with a special certification in TAG and a Reading Endorsement. Because of my varied education and experience back ground I am highly qualified to design individual strategies to assure your child's learning success. Maybe my greatest asset is that my intent is to help every student reach their maximum potential.

SAT Writing

I am happy to say I have helped many students improve their SAT verbal scores. We focus on vocabulary development, not by memorizing thousands of words but learning how to associate roots, prefixes and suffixes and connect word meanings and usages. For the essay I provide my students with a framework that is a "no fail" system. For the other types of reading questions, it is all a matter of learning what types of questions are typical, watching for essential words and question values. This test is a marathon and it requires training just like a marathon race. I am an effective marathon coach for the SAT. It is such a great pleasure for me to coach students for success and then help them write their applications for their first choice colleges!

Sewing

Sewing has been a part of my life since I was a child. I have to sew or create something everyday in order for me to feel right with the world. Right now I am sewing garments and quilts for my grandchildren, place mats, purses, bags and wallets for Christmas presents, and pillowcases and more quilts for my own pleasure. Whatever it is that your want to do with fabric or fiber arts, I can teach advise and have fun with you too.

Social Studies

I taught elementary grades 1-8 for 27 years either as a classroom teacher, a TAG specialist or a school counselor. During the summers I often worked as a reading specialist, a TAG specialist or a resource specialist. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Educations and a Masters degree in Counseling and Psychology with a special certification in TAG and a Reading Endorsement. Of course, social studies was part of the daily curriculum that was integrated into every day activities. We studied ourselves, our community, our state, our culture and our history often with engaging hands on projects and events. As a counselor one year I directed a multi-cultural fair which showcased our fifteen different cultures in our elementary school building. We featured language, native dress, languages, food and traditions from each demographic for the students, parents and community to enjoy. Now that's social studies!

Special Needs

During my 27 years in the education field working with students with learning disabilities, including but not limited to ADHD. I also have 2 Master degrees, one in the field of Counseling and Psychology. As a school counselor I worked closely with parents and children with ADHD/ADD issues. During my last five years of tutoring I've had the pleasure of working with many of these same students and helping them find the tools to manage this learning style in order to go onto great academic success.

Writing

Through my many years working as a teacher and tutor I have assisted students do a myriad of writing activities. I always tell them that all writing is, is their words and ideas on paper. It is just a matter of breaking this complex process down into manageable tasks.

Only focus on one task at a time so it is not so overwhelming. Most times the beginning is just one word or one thought and from that grows a lovely essay. Famous writers say it is a process that cannot be hurried and I agree whole heartedly. I've watched students who say "I cannot write!" finish with a beautiful college application essay, a poem, a long engaging narrative and even a graphic novel type story. I work with all ages and even tutor students in China via Skype who are writing wonderful stories in a language other than their own Chinese. If they can do it, so can YOU!

Wonderful — Mary Ellen spent about an hour by phone and another hour in person getting to know my son, his strengths, his personality and his challenges before even starting a tutoring session. This type of commitment shows the degree to which she cares for her students and what she does. I was equally impressed at her tutoring and interpersonal skills during her session, reflecting a degree of warmth and h ...
