About Brian

I am originally from Chester, England and completed by my first degree at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In the mid 1990s I studied philosophy, English, and German for four years at the University of Freiburg at the heart of Germany's Black Forest. From 1998 to 2008 I taught at different universities in Scotland, Ireland. Since settling in Oregon I have taught at University of Oregon, Oregon State, and Portland State. My main teaching experience is in all aspects of philosophy, but I am also qualified to teach German and English, art theory, and aspects of religious studies. I have wide interests, including literature, the visual arts, music, film, and theater. I am a fluent speaker of German and have working knowledge of French, Italian, Turkish, Ancient Greek, and Latin. Over the last fifteen years I have published five books on philosophy, one in German and four in English. Since coming to Oregon I have established a "Philosophy Cafe" that takes place at Powell's main bookstore in Portland every first Saturday of the month. And yes, there is that strange accent of mine! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Focus on British literature, especially Shakespeare, nineteenth and early twentieth-century novelists (e.g. Dickens, Hardy).

German

I am proficient in written and spoken German. I completed four years of graduate study in Freiburg, Germany. I have experience teaching German at secondary and post-secondary levels.

Grammar

Many years spent studying the grammatical structure of English, German, French, Turkish, Latin, and ancient Greek. Between 1994 and 1998 I taught English grammar to German native speakers.

Literature

Solid knowledge of various European literary traditions, including British, German, French, Italian, and Turkish. Ability to teach different literary genres and literary theory from ancient, medieval, and modern periods.

Philosophy

Research focus on twentieth-century European ("continental") philosophy, especially the phenomenological (Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida) and existential (Sartre, de Beauvoir, Camus) traditions. Wide teaching competence across ethics, politics, epistemology, and ontology in both ancient and modern periods.

Proofreading

Diverse experience of proofreading my own monographs and journal articles written by others for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals. I have also produced translations from German into English for academic article volumes.

Reading

As a college teacher since 1998 I have taught the core skills of careful and effective reading to thousands of students. Such skills are central to the successful study of philosophy and other liberal arts subjects.

Vocabulary

Based on a sound knowledge of the roots of English (through Greek, Latin, German and French) I have exemplary command of the extensive vocabulary of English.

Writing

Proven track-record in international academic and critical writing (four books published by international publishing houses); college-level composition; thesis writing and applied critical thinking.
