Bio

I am an enthusiastic yet down-to-earth, patient, and flexible tutor who enjoys working with students in individual sessions or small groups. I gained a strong background in both science and the humanities from a challenging double major in Integrative Biology and English at the University of California. I am an enthusiastic yet down-to-earth, patient, and flexible tutor who enjoys working with students in individual sessions or small groups. I gained a strong background in both science and the humanities from a challenging double major in Integrative Biology and English at the University of California. After earning a Ph.D. in Zoology at Oregon State University in 2007, I studied ecotoxicology, disease ecology, and the effects of beavers on amphibian populations as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of South Florida and Washington State University, Vancouver. I have also surveyed frog populations in the back country wilderness of Yosemite National Park for the United States Geological Survey and worked as an environmental consultant in the San Francisco area. I currently teach herpetology at Oregon State University and study the relationship between beaver ponds and bats. I have tutored students ranging from the elementary to university level in several subjects including reading, writing, math, biology, and statistics. I am an excellent choice for a student who needs a versatile tutor for help with more than one subject.

I possess an outstanding ability to tutor students in a wide variety of writing styles, including scientific, essay, and creative forms. I am especially skilled and efficient at helping junior high, high school, and college students write essays for academic classes. In my career as an ecologist, I am continuously using my writing skills to publish high-quality scientific papers and produce successful grant proposals. My writing abilities helped me win a prestigious Science to Achieve Results fellowship from the Environmental Protection Agency. Helping students become better writers is particularly important to me because I appreciate how the ability to effectively express ideas forms a strong foundation for success.

I am also an expert at teaching biology and related subjects to students ranging in level from elementary school to college. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Oregon State University, I taught college students in introductory biology laboratory classes for three years. These classes covered biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, physiology, evolution, ecology, biological diversity, and botany. Additionally, I tutor in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and statistics.

Because different students have different interests and learning styles, I tailor my tutoring methods to fit the particular abilities and needs of individual pupils. Furthermore, because I understand the connections between seemingly disparate subjects, I can teach students the value of subjects that they have trouble appreciating and show them how to use all aspects of their education to help them succeed. My goal in tutoring is to use my broad abilities to help students achieve their particular set of goals.

I am available for tutoring sessions in the Portland area starting on Dec. 23rd, 2019. I am happy to answer any questions you might have for me through the WyzAnt email system. Good luck with your studies!

Statistics

Statistics

I work as a professional ecologist, so I use basic and applied statistics frequently as part of my job. I'm an expert in ANOVA, regression, nonparametric statistics, survival analysis, and principle components analysis. I help students understand the technical aspects of probability and statistics and also how to apply these tools to answer scientific questions.

John has over three years of experience tutoring middle school, high school, and collecge students in English, reading, and writing. He is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in English and Integrative Biology. John brings to his teaching twenty years of professional experience writing in a variety of styles, including essays, nonfiction, and scientific reports.
Writing,

Writing

I have a dual background in science and the humanities. Although I work as an ecologist, I earned an undergraduate degree in English at the University of California, Berkeley and since then have continued my involvement in language arts by learning foreign languages and tutoring students in literature and writing. I excel at helping students produce high-quality writing assignments, especially essays, and my students succeed in making long term improvement in their writing abilities.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have three years of experience tutoring in algebra. Most of my algebra 1 students have been in high school, but I have also helped college students with algebra 1. I'm particularly effective and efficient at helping students solve difficult homework problems and prepare for tests. I have a dual background in science and the humanities, so I can often reach students that are disinterested in math by showing them the important connections it has to other subjects and pursuits.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have three years of experience tutoring high school students and college students in algebra 2 and related courses such as college algebra, trigonometry, and calculus in Boston and San Francisco. What makes me different from other math tutors is that I mainly understand math through language rather than x's and y's, which helps me communicate mathematical concepts effectively to students that are more inclined to language arts than math. Also, because I use math frequently in my main job as an ecological researcher, I can give students insight into how math is useful outside of the classroom.
Biology,

Biology

I taught three years of introductory biology laboratory classes at Oregon State University and I've helped several high school and college students improve their grades in biology classes. Because I work as a researcher in ecology, a discipline that incorporates all aspects of biology, I help students reach a deep understanding of the course material and how to apply the scientific method in biology and other sciences. I have a dual background in science and the humanities and use it to reach students that are initially more inclined to language and art than science.

I am a professional ecologist who uses basic and advanced biostatistics in my research. I've used methods such as ANOVA, Tukey tests, regression, cox proportional hazards models, and rank-sum tests and published the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. I am currently using principle component analysis to look for morphological differences between frog species. I have extensive experience tutoring introductory statistics which helps me tutor in the specialized and advanced subjects that come up in biostatistics courses.
