Columbia Univerity (History)
My name is Kevin. I am currently an instructor at Lewis & Clark College, where I teach courses in US History. I have also have experience teaching academic writing at the University of Washington, where I am getting my PhD. I received my BA from Columbia University in 2010.
I have tutoring experience in math, chemistry, Spanish, English, writing, and US history. I never do a student's work for them; my goal is to teach my students how to think on their own. I will show them how to do something once, and then I will steer them in the right direction when they need help without giving them any answers. I have a passion for teaching, and I hope to be a professor.
I have been a competitive swimmer since the age of 5 and a water polo player since the age of 9. I served as an assistant swim coach for five summers, and I have also taught private and group swim lessons. I taught group and private swim lessons at the Meredith Matthews-East Madison YMCA in Seattle for 5 years while attending grad school. My name is Kevin. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a professor of US History. I am also an AP US History Rater.
I have been a competitive swimmer since the age of 5, and I made the Varsity Swim Team at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California as a freshman. I've been coached by great coaches, and I have a gained a vast knowledge of the sport as a result.
I have been an assistant swim coach for the Lake Forest II Dolphins Swim Team in Lake Forest, California, the team I started swimming with at the age of 5, for the past 5 summers. As an assistant coach I have experience running practices tailored for both speed and endurance training as well as experience giving instruction on stroke technique, starts, turns, finishes, and relay exchanges. I have been giving private instruction to members of the Dolphins Swim Team since the age of 14, and I have enjoyed watching the times of every swimmer with which I've worked individually drop.
In addition to being a swim coach, I have been the Head Swim Instructor for the Lake Forest II Sun & Sail Club Red Cross Swim Lessons program. This has given me experience teaching kids of abilities ranging from first learning how to swim to preparing to be a competitive swimmer. I also have experience giving private lessons to kids of all different abilities, and I'm open to teaching adults as well.
I have been playing water polo since the age of 9. I played with SET (Saddleback El Toro) Water Polo and TRAP (Trabuco Aquatics Program) prior to entering high school. I played water polo for El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California, a perennial contender for the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Southern Section Division 1 water polo championship. I've been coached by the best, and I've been commended by my coaches for being the kind of player who always knows where I should go even though I was never the strongest or fastest guy in the pool.
I plan on joining the Columbia University Club Water Polo Team this fall, and I would love to share my knowledge of the sport with other young athletes.
I was an Instructor at a university's Interdisciplinary Writing Program.
