San Francisco State University (Master's)
I am an ESL teacher interested in finding ESL students to tutor. I'm a graduate of the Masters degree program in Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages at San Francisco State University. I taught English for three years in South Korea, first in Pusan at ELS Dognae, then at Pusan National University and finally in Seoul at Sungshin Women's University. I have taught ESL in New York City at Baruch College (CUNY}and in the New York Public Library's ESL program.I have also worked as a private ESL tutor both in South Korea and in Mexico. I have taught speaking and listening, reading and writing, grammar, and pronunciation, and I have worked with students of all levels from beginning to advanced. In New York City I have had the opportunity to work with students from many different countries. I feel comfortable with people of all nationalities and enjoy learning about their home countries.
I am a very patient and creative teacher/tutor. I have the skill and the training to be able to identify a student's needs and individual problems and to find an approach that works well with that particular student. I emphasize effective communication skills, including a command of grammar, fluency in speaking, good listening skills and satisfactory pronunciation. I like to encourage a student to learn to talk about subjects that she or he finds interesting and to practice real-life conversational skills. Grammar will then be approached as needed. To make the grammar more enjoyable there will be grammar games and fun exercises. If you wish, we can also focus on writing skills.
I'm looking forward to meeting you and getting to work with you! I am an ESL teacher interested in finding ESL students to tutor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
