My strengths are creativity, organization and taking a proactive approach to assessing student's strengths and weaknesses to target their needs. I have over 15 years of experience teaching primary grade students in public and charter school settings. Core Knowledge curriculum was used in both the charter and public school where I last taught.
Much of my training has been focused in the area of literacy with an emphasis on phonics, specifically Saxon Phonics- a comprehensive reading, spelling and writing program. This method helps students who need remedial help by giving them the foundation they need to succeed. Additionally, I have post graduate training in expository writing strategies including paragraphs, reports and vocabulary development.
I am passionate about helping students feel successful and confident in these subjects; reading and writing are essential skills for learning, expanding our lives and eventually going out into the world prepared for the workplace.

So far my son has loved working with Merrianna. I have watched him become more sure of himself in the few short lessons he's had. So far it's been really great.
Merianna has been a pleasure to to work with. She as been very accommodating to our son's schedule, needs and abilities. Our son's reading and confidence has grown tremendously since he started working with Merianna. She is a wonderful tutor & we hold her in the highest regard!
Merrianna was wonderful with my 8 year old son who has struggled with reading since kindergarten. He loved meeting her and is exciting to see her every week.
Merrianna has helped my seven year old daughter gain confidence in her reading. She was worried she might be behind the other second graders, which is why we hired her. She likes her sessions and is now heading back to school feeling more comfortable. I would reccomend her to anyone.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Being a former primary teacher, I have taught beginning handwriting skills including stroke and sequence of letter formation in Kindergarten and later spacing and proximity when beginning to write sentences. Additionally, I have taught cursive to 3rd grade students.
My experience with teaching phonics as a foundation is sound. I have over 15 years of primary teaching experience with using programs such as Saxon phonics. Some of my experience includes teaching second language learners these foundations to help them learn to read in English. A clear understanding of letter/ sound relationships , vowel sounds and blends is what I can offer students in a way to remediate and/or help them progress in reading.
My experience as an elementary teacher has allowed me to work with students at all levels in their reading. I have experience teaching phonics and whole language and was a reading specialist in grades 4 and 5.
Over 15 years of teaching primary grade students with an emphasis on phonics, specifically Saxon phonics, has given me a sound foundation to teach spelling. My method is to integrate spelling with reading and writing when working with students.
I took a Masters level course on the Read/ Write Connection when I was teaching. This course outlined creative ways to teach expository and response writing as well as study skills, vocabulary builders and complex sentence structure. I would love to teach in this area and use what I learned.
