About Chris

Hello,
My name is Chris, and I have worked in education for over 30 years. My favorite subjects to teach are reading, writing, history and art. I have worked with elementary through college age students as a teacher, counselor, mentor, and even administrator. I have spent most of my career in education working with alternative and charter schools, but have also worked with community colleges, high schools, middle schools, grade schools and community programs. I belong to a number of historical organizations and volunteer with the National Parks and several local museums.

My educational philosophy is that most students can do well in school if you focus on the whole student, not just the subject matter. I believe in taking into consideration everything from the student's personality and learning style to their strengths, weaknesses, and issues ( both academic and other.) By doing this is easier to meet the student's individual needs and achieve their goals. I also believe that by using a combination of teaching and counseling techniques, students with various types of disabilities can reach their goals better than by only focusing on academics. If a student is dealing with issues like hyper-activity, dyslexia, or autism, it is harder for them to focus on learning. By dealing with these types of issues along with the student's academics, the student has a better chance of succeeding. I have specialized in working with students with different types of learning, emotional, mental, and other disabilities for the last 15 years. My master's degree is in both education and counseling, and I also have degrees in fine art and commercial art.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I currently sub-contract with the Oregon City School District as a tutor /counselor/mentor for students on the autism spectrum and with other disabilities. I have a MS in Education / Counseling from Portland State University. This included course work in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals on the autism spectrum. I completed both the school and the community/clinical tracks in the MSEC program. I have also taken numerous workshops and other classes on autism and related disorders. I have worked with students with special needs including autism for the past 30 years. My background is in alternative education with an emphasis on students who do not fit the "norm" and need alternative ways of learning.

I have worked for Clackamas Community College from 1983 to 1992 as a teacher in alternative education and as a counselor working with students including women returning to the work place and what the college referred to as "displaced workers". I helped write the curriculum for the colleges study skills class, a special class for students with disabilities to help the get ready for college and joining the work force, high school career development for the alternative education department, and in the counseling department helping students develop job skills and find jobs. I also worked with Portland States Upward Bound program teaching classes in career development.
