Bio

I stand dedicated to helping parents raise healthy, well-rounded, academically successful young adults who not only know how to learn, but love learning! I will do my part to provide lessons that are fun, adaptable to the real world, and are tailored to your child's learning style. I genuinely enjoy and respect children, and they usually feel the same about me, as I make great efforts to build rapport with them.

During my years as a classroom teacher I was known for having high expectations of my students, and the same applies to the students I tutor. However, I know that when one struggles in a subject they are truly longing to feel some semblance of achievement, therefore my method involves helping students to set thoughtful, realistic goals and providing many opportunities for academic success along the way.

I also have extensive experience and passion for teaching students with special needs. I have worked with students on the autism spectrum, students with dyslexia and dysgraphia, and students with ADHD/ADD. Although I have no formal special needs training, I have collected techniques for encouraging all students to learn.

Elementary (K-6th)

Active teaching license since 2002 in the areas of early childhood development and elementary pedagogy. I have taught as a standard classroom teacher of third graders and taught a three/four blend for a total of three years. I have substitute taught all the grades and all subjects including Music, P.E. and Art for grades K-6 for over a decade, and have enjoyed the joy of the pre-K set as a childcare center director and teacher.
Elementary Science,

Elementary Science

No matter how old or young. I will make learning science concepts fun! My expertise is teaching science to young children in meaningful, engaging ways that translate to a lifetime of curiosity and confidence that they are a scientist and can discover and understand our world with the best of them using the scientific method of inquiry.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have an MAT degree in early childhood and elementary education and an English to Speakers of Other Languages endorsement. I taught 3rd grade for 3 years and 4th grade for one year. During this time I taught phonics to 4 students in one on one or small group settings. I am familiar with Sylvan Learning Center's phonics programs as I taught for them for close to one year before I got a full time teaching job. The program I use for my students is a combination of phonemic awareness and phonics instruction; including implicit instruction of common syllables and sounds, "rule breakers," fun practice of Dolch sight words, word building games, "key-words" that facilitate memorization and frequent assessment and repetition.
