About Katie

I am 27 years old and graduated not long ago with a degree from a Christian University. The major I acquired in Leadership and Ministry is a well rounded degree giving me the tools to be helpful in a variety of areas. I love children and have worked as a camp counselor for ages 7-16, as a kindergarten assistant and substitute aid, and as a nanny for 3 1/2 years. My dad was a 3rd grade teacher his entire working career, so I also grew up grading papers with him, helping run the classroom, and love the relationship of a teacher and student.
My area of expertise includes anything in elementary learning, as well as language/English for middle school age. I love PowerPoint and can be very helpful with presentations, projects and public speaking. I'm very eager to make any student their very best.

My degree in leadership and ministry required many classes on public speaking, all books of the bible, theology, philosophy, you name it I probably studied it as it relates to Christianity. The degree I took also required essays each week with an extensive final essay every 4 weeks. The amount of writing and familiarity with MLA format have made me quite familiar with an writing needs. I also have tips on how to read/comprehend effectively which I am happy to pass on.

My extensive work with K-5th grade both through numerous volunteer hours helping my father in his 3rd grade class as well as the years of paid and volunteer experience I have with children has helped me to understand the mind, focus, energy level and heart of a child. Not only did I work as a kindergarten assistant but also did substitute aid work for other ages as well. I have led reading groups and helped with elementary math, science, language, art and writing.

I believe that many times students simply need another person or way of learning to be successful. It isn't that they lack the ability, they simply lack the right person or tools to help them recognize their own talent. Tutoring isn't simply forcing them to do their homework, it's building the confidence and joy of learning in a student and having the patience to do so. I believe that's one of my greatest strengths and I cannot wait to be of help.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
