About Neil

I provide personal writing tutoring and editing services for academic research papers, essays, and general academic applications, as well as for business plans or other non-academic purposes.

I have two years of experience working in higher education as a teaching aid and graduate researcher and have written academic conference papers. I also have twelve years of experience analyzing, writing, and presenting business plans to corporate boards and their investors. I left corporate employment for academia and left academic employment to start a family farming business, but I love teaching and enjoy continuing to do so.

I have coached both high school and college students to improve their writing for short essays as well as full length academic research papers. I can help a student revise and edit a specific project; I can also help students improve their writing skills more generally and I can and have tutored students for the SAT and AP exams. I have both created and graded college exams.

A skill which provides great dividends in life is the ability to analyze complex ideas and effectively communicate them in writing. In both my corporate and my academic experience I have found that many students are unprepared to do so. Schools very typically lack the resources to teach students how to write and communicate clearly and effectively. To do so requires personal instruction that even the best classroom teachers may not have the time to provide. I provide a personalized tutoring program tailored to the needs of the individual student. I have assisted students who needed remedial help as well as students who already made good grades and sought to publish some of their work.

In the past I tutored students in history, economics, government, and statistics, in addition to writing and public speaking. At the present time I am focusing mostly on writing, which is the the area in which I think I can provide the most beneficial impact. However, if a student would prefer to practice writing skills while using materials that help them study for other subjects, I am happy to do what I can to comply. For example, I have in the past tutored a writing student who was studying for a history exam by having the student write responses to sample AP History essays, since I am familiar with the AP course material. For students who are writing papers based on statistical data, I can and will help with the statistical aspect as well as the writing. For any research involving large data sets I encourage students to use the open-source statistical programming language "R" which is common in most of academia and many government offices, and I am happy to help students learn the basics in the course of advising on such a research paper.

I am a third-generation Eagle Scout and have volunteered in the past as an assistant scoutmaster. I enjoy reading books about military history, especially WW2, the Napoleonic era, and the latter days of the Roman empire. I also enjoy studying moral and political philosophy, in particular the Aristotelian and Thomist derivatives, as well as the theological writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar. From my academic studies I retain an interest in the international relations policies of China as well as the causes of war and peace in international relations. I enjoy being a sci-fi geek/nerd and am happy to recommend sometimes lesser-known sci fi and fantasy books which are fun reads but also provide the reader an edifying vocabulary and writing style.

My hourly rate may be negotiable depending on travel distance and the number of lessons you would like. While I will entertain any proposal for my tutoring services, in general I would prefer to begin tutoring at least two weeks prior to an essay deadline and at least a month before any longer paper or exam. I will make exceptions but I find that usually any less time is not sufficient to make any real progress.

I tutor because I enjoy teaching and believe I have a responsibility to pass along what I have learned. I entertain a great respect for what used to be called a liberal arts education and I believe that the ultimate purpose of education is to realize the intellectual capacity of each human person. This pursuit of personal intellectual improvement happily tends to result in some greater measure of material success.

I find that George Orwell's essay "Politics and the English Language" describes perfectly the bland, meaningless jumbles of words churned out by even top university students these days. Through little fault of any individual teacher, modern education is designed to produce graduates who know the answer to a set of specific questions and who can follow directions. Good writing requires the ability to think abstractly and analytically about broad topics, organize specific facts and examples within a logical framework, and use honest but effective rhetorical techniques to communicate an idea to the intended audience. The ability to do so is correlated with monetary success and also, I believe, contributes to the greater intellectual development of the individual.

I find that my combination of corporate and academic experience helps me to spot the most opportune areas for improvement for each student and to design a tutoring program which addresses each student's specific needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have delivered a substitute lecture to an undergraduate class when the professor was not available; I delivered an academic presentation at a major international academic conference; I have led question-and-answer review sessions for undergraduate students; as a teenager I was a senior patrol leader in the Boy Scouts and was responsible for calling meetings to order and explaining the necessary tasks to other scouts; I have 8 years of amateur stage acting experience from high school and college; during the course of my business career I presented analytical findings to Boards of Directors, CEOs, and financial investors.
